!!The film
* AssPull: The ending where [[spoiler:Lincoln's Memorial is one of Thade, and apes rule Earth in the present day.]] Creator/HelenaBonhamCarter has said she pointed out to Creator/TimBurton that the ending made no sense after reading the script, to which he grinned and said, [[IntendedAudienceReaction "I know, isn't it great?"]] Although impressively, Carter herself was later able to come up with an explanation that actually makes sense.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** Music/DannyElfman hasn't lost his touch. The main titles theme particularly stands out.
** As well as the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeMSPdV3BO4 Rule The Planet Remix]] ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50G3UyB4umI full version here]]) by Paul Oakenfold.
* EpilepticTrees: One simple fan hypothesis regarding the twist ending posits the [[NegativeSpaceWedgie electromagnetic storm]] sent Leo [[spoiler: to an AlternateUniverse. He did return to Earth in his time, ''just not of his dimension''.]]
* HamAndCheese: Thade, to the point where there's compilation videos of his over the top acting.
* HilariousInHindsight: The WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes series ''WebAnimation/PlanetOfTheTaz'' had a just as absurd ending where Daffy and Porky arrive at Earth filled with [[spoiler:Bugs Bunnies]].
* {{Narm}}:
** The scene in which Leo returns to a present-day Earth where everybody is an ape otherwise dressing and acting in every way like humans is impossible to take seriously.
** The hero trying to pull off "no man left behind" on a chimp. It would be one thing if he was presented as a FriendToAllLivingThings, but instead of that, the movie treats it with all the seriousness of Generic Movie Hero Behavior. The confusion about the fact that it's all about a random trained animal makes it hard to treat the scene seriously.
* NarmCharm: On paper, Creator/CharltonHeston playing an ape whose last words are [[ActorAllusion "DAMN THEM! DAMN THEM ALL TO...]]" should be rather silly... but Heston sells the ''crap'' out of that line.
* OlderThanTheyThink: The infamous twist ending was inspired by [[Literature/PlanetOfTheApes the original novel by Pierre Boulle]], where [[spoiler:Ulysse escapes from Soror (the literal eponymous planet) and returns to Earth, only to find that it was also taken over by apes in his absence.]]
* RootingForTheEmpire: Sure, General Thade is a right bastard who tries to wipe out humanity, but it's easy to admire him for his martial prowess and RankScalesWithAsskicking status, devotion to his father's legacy, and ability to actually get shit done compared to the sleazy ape politicians. Plus, unlike the [[DullSurprise dull-eyed hero Leo]] he's at least displaying [[HamAndCheese some enjoyable pathos]].
%%* SignatureLine: "Take your stinking hands off me, you damn dirty human!"
%%* SignatureScene: The twist ending.
* SoOkayItsAverage: The general consensus of the film's reception is mediocre. The effects, music and visuals are worthy of praise, but it's all hindered by bland heroes, some strange performances and the infamously confusing ending.
* {{Squick}}: Leo the human kissing Ari the chimpanzee on the lips. Granted she's not exactly a mindless animal, but ''still''...
* TearJerker: Thade's moments with his dying father, Zaius. Rather than telling his son that he loves and is proud of him, Zaius wastes his last words cursing humanity.
* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: Creator/TimRoth and Creator/MichaelClarkeDuncan are clearly devoted to this film, particularly Roth who gives the role his everything and makes Thade a legitimately compelling, charismatic and complex villain who is both a loathsome fanatic and xenophobe and a sympathetic figure who honestly believes in what he's doing.
* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: Creator/KevinSmith famously (and half-jokingly) accused Tim Burton of plagiarizing the infamous scene of the monkey's head on the Lincoln memorial from a parody he did of the original ''Apes'' movie in his comic ''Chasing Dogma'' (it also appeared in ''Film/JayAndSilentBobStrikeBack'', released the same year as this film). When asked for comment, Burton gave the uncharacteristically nasty response of "Anyone who knows me knows I've never read a comic book and anyone who ''really'' knows me knows [[TakeThat I would never read anything by Kevin Smith]]." Smith [[InsultBackfire put the second half of this quote on the back of his autobiography]].
* VindicatedByHistory: Downplayed, but with the [[Film/RiseOfThePlanetOfTheApes the]] [[Film/DawnOfThePlanetOfTheApes Caesar]] [[Film/WarForThePlanetOfTheApes trilogy]] having brought balance in the franchise and the onslaught of franchise media that relies on easy nostalgia, some fans have looked back to this film more kindly, with an appreciation for its effort to do something genuinely different and in Burton's own style rather than simply copy and paste the original, even if some of the writing choices such as the ending are still very divisive.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The only aspect of the movie that exceeds the 1968 one, particularly regarding make-up.

!!The video game
* CompleteMonster (PC[=/=]Platform/PlayStation version): [[ANaziByAnyOtherName General Ursus]] is the leader of the gorillas and one of the members of the Ape High Council. Seeing gorillas as [[MasterRace superior to other apes]], Ursus discovered that Professor Cornelius managed to find a way to use human DNA to improve the ape genetic code. Forcing Professor Cornelius to work for him and continue his [[PlayingWithSyringes experiments]] on captured humans, Ursus planned to "enhance" the gorillas and create an unbeatable army, which he intended to use it to [[KillAllHumans completely wipe out humanity]] and take over the ape society, while slaughtering any ape who would resist his rule. When [[PlayerCharacter Ulysses]] humiliated him and stole the results of Cornelius's research, Ursus ordered his gorillas to attack a human village and wipe out most of the humans there.
* DemonicSpiders: practicality all the apes are this due to how hard they hit, their ability to block your attacks, and the fact that they are all over the game.
* EventObscuringCamera: The camera has a tendency to get blocked by the foreground.
* GoddamnedBats: The rats, which are small and annoying, but much easier than the apes due to not being able to block.
* TheProblemWithLicensedGames: The game was trashed by reviews due to the unfair difficulty, amongst other things.
* ScrappyMechanic:
** The lack of checkpoints or extra lives.
** The combat system due to the apes blocking most attacks while you can't block. Not helped by how much damage they inflict when they hit you.
* ScrappyWeapon: The knife. It doesn't do any more harm than the fists, has a short range, and leaves you open after every third swing.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: The opening cinematic is incredibly well detailed. Sadly, same cannot be said about the in-game graphics.
