** Well, except that the terrorists they're fighting kill their friends and family, are trying to destroy their capital, and yet ''[[NotSoDifferent actually believe in the same ideals as them]]''. And that Okita's dying of tuberculosis. And that Kondo, Hijikata, Yamanami, and Okita had to assassinate Serizawa because he [[DirtyCop used his power for racketeering]] just a ''year'' before the series begins. And the fact that, for them, the penalty for ''any'' violation of the Shinsengumi rules ''or'' Bushido in general, was ''[[DisproportionateRetribution ritual suicide]]''. So, no, that they manage to be as cheerful as they are is actually quite impressive.

** Also, the ever-smiling, childlike Okita Souji ([[BadAss at least until the swords come out]]).

Most notably [[spoiler: Suzu]], who was originally a good person when he was straight - however, once he goes [[AxCrazy crazy]], his behavior becomes very flamboyant and he gets gay whenever Tetsunosuke is concerned.

* HoYay: It's almost as bad as GetBackers.
** Oh god, where to start? The whole series is like the living incarnation of HoYay. Okita and Hijikata, Suzu and Tetsunosuke, Susumu and Tetsunosuke, Tatsunosuke and Tetsunosuke, Suzu and Yoshida, Heisuke and Shinpachi, etc. Most of the HoYay appears to be on purpose, however.
** This doesn't actually seem too far off if you consider that homosexual relationships were common during that era, especially with the men from the Shinsengumi. Heck the Japanese even had a term for two male samurai having sex, just look up [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shudo shudo]].

* DesignatedProtagonistSyndrome: Tetsu and Tatsu are the least interesting members of the cast, with the former being a loud-mouthed over-sensitive [[TheScrappy runt]] and the latter being a coward who tries to be meek and force his brother to do the same.

After that he proceeds to [[HoYay act very flirtatiously]] [[YaoiGuys with other guys]], becomes a ruthless {{Chessmaster}} in order to get his revenge on those he deems responsible for said traumatic experiences, is ''really'' [[FoeYay obsessed with Tetsu]], often lounges around [[EvilIsSexy half naked]], and [[VillainousFashionSense wears]] a lot of [[FurAndLoathing black fur]].
** Okita Souji. A [[{{Bishonen}} beautiful]] and [[DudeLooksLikeALady effeminate]] young man [[OneOfTheKids who loves eating sweets and playing with children]], [[spoiler: but is actually hiding his issues under [[StepfordSmiler his cheerful smile]], issues that include [[TheWoobie dying of tuberculosis and being forced to kill one of his closest friends]],]] [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass and can slice you open without hesitation.]]

Granted, Yoshida was already somewhat injured and fatigued while Tetsu was fresh, but given that Yoshida is implied to be one of the strongest samurai in the series at that point, it still counts.
