* FauxActionGirl: Quite debatable in Kagero's case. Although she puts up a front of not needing anyone's help, she's never able to stand up toe to toe with any of the film's villains save for perhaps Benisato (but then again, Jubei has a hard enough time himself). But more often than not, it's thanks to her that Jubei survives his closer encounters.

He does, [[AndIMustScream but not quite]] [[FateWorseThanDeath how he wanted it...]] Though it's doubtful anyone watching will feel much pity for him by this point.
** Genma's minion Tessai deserves a mention as well. Tessai is a bloodthirsty maniac who cheerfully mows down dozens of people and takes the surviving women as his rape victims. While molesting Kagero, he tells her not to struggle because he wouldn't mind having sex with a dead chick.

* SuperlativeDubbing: Quite well done for a 1994 film, and seems to rival most Creator/{{Funimation}} dubs. It trades in some typical stock anime phrases with some typical action movie stock phrases, but considering the subject matter, it just works so well.

** If you suffer from Trypophobia, try to watch any scene with Mushizo without scratching. You will fail.

* SuperlativeDubbing: Quite well done for a 1994 film, and seems to rival most {{Funimation}} dubs. It trades in some typical stock anime phrases with some typical action movie stock phrases, but considering the subject matter, it just works so well.

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: No, this is not like ''{{Naruto}}'', despite being {{Anime}} with ninjas. Tessai's gory slaughter of the Koga ninja and attempted rape of Kagero should be your first clues.

** If you suffer from Trypophobia, try to watch any scence with Mushizo without scratching. You will fail.

* HighOctaneNightmareFuel: Highlights include: Tessai's sickening massacre of the Koga ninja; Benisato using the skin of an old woman filled with serpents so she could lure Jubei where she wanted to trap him; the death of [[spoiler:Mushizo when he falls underwater and is torn apart from the inside out by the hornets trying to escape his body]]; and of course, [[spoiler:Genma's death scene]].
