* TheScrappy: Coach. Kind of an Inverted ReplacementScrappy. He appeared in the pilot, then Damon Wayans Jr. [[Series/HappyEndings got renewed for another season]] so [[PutOnABus Coach ended up moving out of the loft sometime between episode 1 and 2]]. When his series was cancelled, [[TheBusCameBack Coach mysteriously moved back]]. Only problem, there was no real role for Coach anymore, having been successfully replaced by Winston. The fans felt that instead of adding to the show, Coach was messing with the casts impressive chemistry. The writers realized this as well, and Coach [[CommutingOnABus left once again by the end of season 4, moving to New York]]. The show itself wasn't above playing off this, as when the gang takes a trip to NYC, they run into Coach on the street, incensed that none of them took the time to visit him. [[TakeThatScrappy They in turn all avoid eye contact and walk away from him.]]

* UnpopularPopularCharacter:
** Schmidt is considered obnoxious by many characters (he even has a "douchebag jar" just for him) and it's often stated on the show that Cece is too good for him. Outside of the show, fans love him and he's the most popular character along with Nick.
** Winston's increasing weird quirks as the show goes on caused him to become TheFriendNobodyLikes and the group's scapegoat, but at the same time funnier and more popular with fans.
** Zig-zagged with Nick, who is definitely loved by fans, but is not necessarily unpopular in-universe. Despite being portrayed as a JadedWashout loser, he has no problem attracting women, and his friends admit he's TheHeart of the group.

%%* ValuesDissonance: Just a decade later and many aspects of the show, particularly in earlier seasons, don't hold up well. For example, the casual racism (especially against Asians) that abounds in early episodes. It does improve quite a lot as the show progresses, however -- still, it's quite hard to imagine a successful, feel-good slice-of-life show today that has a white man (such as Schmidt) casually make fetishistic/unnecessary remarks about the Indian heritage of his canon love interest (Cece).

Then the writers made him think he had cancer. Which only became apparent through a severe back injury he had to go to a gynecologist for because he can't afford health insurance. To make matters worse, Nick is already incredibly cynical, not having the luxury of Jess' rose-tinted glasses.
*** Yeah, Jess got past her break-up angst (a lot more quickly and cleanly than Nick got past his) and has since been basically replaced by Nick as the designated woobie.
