reason not valid for deletion, is YMMV, not everyone has to agree

Added DiffLines:

* InformedWrongness: Starlight Glimmer gives Twilight Sparkle flak for not trusting Trixie, and by extension, not trusting her. Thing is, genuinely good pony at heart or not, Starlight is a reforming ex-villain. Prior to her HeelFaceTurn she was dangerous, aggressive, and unhinged, and committed terrible deeds that endangered Equestria, and even post-HeelFaceTurn she struggles with not falling back on abusing her magic to get her way (something that even happens in this episode). And then Trixie is another former villain who also did terrible things, and last time we saw her even if she was apologetic, she never really "reformed", and already came back for revenge against Twilight once before. It's not hard to understand why Twilight would be against the two of them becoming friends.

Misuse

* MisaimedFandom: Fans who dislike Starlight Glimmer feel as though this episode was made to just to make Starlight look good by making every pony in the episode look unfavorable. However, the only character who was the closest of being displayed out-of-character was Mrs. Cake, and it can be understandable since running businesses against competition is very stressful for any business owners. Twilight displaying lack of trustworthiness towards Trixie is not the first time Twilight has sweated under minor and past problems, and Celestia displaying boredom at the party was intended for comedy rather than anything relating to her character. Aside from that, every other character was portrayed as their usual selves in this episode, making Starlight's path to redemption by making a friend quite fair enough.

Broken Base on Informed Wrongness, and YMMV tropes can't be played with.

* DesignatedVillain: {{Deconstructed|Trope}}. Twilight Sparkle was willing to give the dangerous and possibly psychotic Starlight Glimmer a chance at redemption but rigidly refuses to drop her personal grudge with the decidedly less villainous Trixie. The episode features Twilight being called out for it several times and gives her a MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment when it hits her just how badly she's harming Trixie.

There's a lot of ways them becoming friends could have turned out dangerously.

Only applies to the work causing the tough act to follow. Not those effected by it.

* ToughActToFollow: When the episode's synopsis was revealed, fans gave it this reaction after [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS6E5GauntletOfFire the previous one]] established Spike's shining moment and the introduction of a new [[EnsembleDarkhorse popular side character]] to be the sixth season's high points so far. With a notorious fandom BaseBreakingCharacter like ''Trixie'' involved, it had gotten ''much'' tougher. This unfortunately turned out to be the case for some, as the episode turned out to be the first major BrokenBase episode of the season.

Thing is, genuinely good person at heart or not, Starlight is a reforming ex-villain. Prior to her HeelFaceTurn she was dangerous, aggressive, and unhinged, and committed some of the worst acts any villain in the series has ever done. Even post HeelFaceTurn she still struggles quite a bit with basic concepts of right and wrong. Regardless of how unjustified Twilight Sparkle may be in not trusting Trixie at this point, she has ''every valid reason in the world'' to not wholly trust Starlight.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: Twilight and Trixie's interactions demonstrate that it's easy to say you forgive someone you have a bad history with, but it can be difficult to actually make good on it and let go of those grudges (regardless of who started it). The angst that Starlight suffers in the last act also demonstrates that others in your life can be negatively affected by all this, even if that's not the intent.

Cut trope

* CounterpartComparison: Both being past villains who were corrupted further by a magical artifact, Trixie's situation in Ponyville is almost just like Sunset's situation at Canterlot High during ''[[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks Rainbow Rocks]]''.

1. Animation Lead Time means this was likely planned beforehand as opposed to an after the fact save. 2. It notes it raised new problems, so it's now exactly successful. If YMMV isn't straight or successful, it's not this trope.

* AuthorsSavingThrow: Similar to Discord's treatment in Season 4, after complaints that Starlight's redemption was too quick and easy, here we see that she's still struggling to not fall back into her villainous actions. Trixie gets a bit of the same treatment. We also see that Twilight is in general less accepting/trusting of reformed characters who retain a lot of their smug/jerk tendencies; it's not something she reserved for Discord. [[BrokenBase Then on the other hand]], the dark side of this trope rolled around and [[GoneHorriblyRight may have worked ''too well'']], because it created new complaints that this really reflects poorly on the "heroes", making them [[{{Hypocrite}} hypocritical]] at best and [[KnightTemplar judgmental]] at worst. Twilight Sparkle wound up losing ''a ton'' of favor in this episode among fans because of this.

Trixie was under the influence of the Amulet at the time, so that's not something we can fully fault her for.
