Merging the two bullet points that suggest Fluttershy was acting into one.

*** Why was Fluttershy so afraid of the manticore, when she befriended one so easily in the pilot? Was she really afraid of the manticore or just playing along for the show? She certainly recovers quickly from fainting and is happily cheering at the end despite the manticore still being there.
*** For that matter, was Fluttershy's reaction due to Trixie performing a magic trick that can easily kill her if not done properly, or is she more concerned about the manticore, who is being fired upon by a Trixie-loaded cannon?
*** Another possibility is that her "fear" was part of the act. After all, who got the manticore to participate in the first place? But who better to hype the fear factor than Fluttershy, that lover of all animals (except for big scary dragons).

cannon? If this interpretation is that her "fear" was part of true, maybe she ''was'' nervous and ''did'' faint and recover quickly, but not for the act. After all, who got the manticore to participate in the first place? But who better to hype the fear factor than Fluttershy, that lover of all animals (except for big scary dragons).reason one might think.

* UncannyValley: [[https://derpibooru.org/1143852 Trixie's posters]] are drawn in a much more detailed and heavily shaded style than the show's more cartoony style, which makes it look a bit out of place.

** The biggest point of contention with the episode concerns Twilight Sparkle and her characterization. You have fans who feel Twilight's characterization is in line with the rest of her appearances, especially when it comes to old foes and you have fans who feel that Twilight is acting out of character and should have been more accepting. There are also a handful of fans who take a RonTheDeathEater approach to Twilight's characterization and accuse her of being an outright villain to the DracoInLeatherPants Trixie.

* DracoInLeatherPants: Many of those who [[RonTheDeathEater criticize Twilight Sparkle's actions]] place Trixie into this trope, believing that her HeelFaceTurn in "The Magic Duel" was genuine and sticking and that Twilight forced Starlight and Trixie's break up, forgetting that it was Trixie who opened her mouth and ruined things in the process.

* RonTheDeathEater: Twilight Sparkle received ''merciless'' backlash from the fans due to her very controversial behavior in this episode. Even though she was [[JerkassHasAPoint right]] (to a certain extent), her actions and motivations led to Trixie and Starlight's ugly breakup, and the ugly implications surrounding the aftermath that followed unfortunately only poured more gas on the fire.

YMMV, especially something by definition unintentional like Informed Wrongness, cannot be lampshaded. And as Trixie realizes her mistake it not entirely unintentional Twi is right about Trix regarding her apparent Ignored Epiphany. This goes for ambiguity on both side and the Starlight thing is the one that's unacknowaged.

* InformedWrongness: Starlight Glimmer calls Twilight Sparkle out for not trusting Trixie and by extension, not trusting her. But Starlight had recently (this was her second lesson since) committed the most dangerous and seriously-played evildoing in the series such Starlight herself doubted she deserved to be so EasilyForgiven, and showed in this episode and subsequent ones to still be prone to abusing magic and struggling with basic concepts of right and wrong. And with Trixie hardly showing to Twilight that she has changed and continuing to hold her grudge against Twilight only furthers Twilight's doubts about Trixie being Starlight's first friend as a good idea considering how similar they are, to which even Twilight lampshades this.
-->'''Twilight''': Starlight? A moment? Over here? I know I said make friends with anypony, but, well, with Trixie's past, and your past, I'm not sure she's the best first friend.

Trope misuse. Character Shilling is when the narrative goes out of its way to tell you how awesome a character is. That's not what happens in this episode as Starlight uses her magic to help her make friends, but it ends up backfiring and the ponies get mad at her for her misuse of magic. And nopony in this episode held the Jerkass Ball, they were mostly all in character. The closest out of character moment were the scenes with Celestia, but those scenes were meant to be Played For Laughs.

** Starlight's portrayal continues to be a bit of a crowd divider. Some were sympathetic about Starlight struggling to fit in with her magical powers while lacking in social skills and were glad that she wasn't simply being mopey all the time like in the season premiere. Some felt that since this was done at the expense of bringing in characters to the story just to portray them either as uncharacteristically or [[JerkassBall as unfavorably as possible]], [[CharacterShilling the narrative was going out of its way to make Starlight look good.]] Others felt that the absurdly-skilled-neurotic-wizard-without-social-skills niche had already been done with Twilight a few seasons ago.

Okay, never mind. It felt like you were downplaying Twilight's and Trixie's faults in this episode and making Starlight the only one wrong here.

Twilight never really seemed to have mistrust in Starlight except for when it came to choosing her friends, because even with this episode and later episodes of Starlight messing up, Twilight still seems to put plenty of trust in her.

The not trusting Trixie part was something where both Twi and Trix were equally in the right/wrong.

* InformedWrongness: Starlight Glimmer gives Twilight Sparkle flak for not trusting Trixie, and by extension, not trusting her with choosing her friends. But Twilight is not really in the wrong for this due to not believing Trixie had changed from her past deeds, and Trixie barely showed to her at all that she really is a changed pony. And in Starlight's case, she is still struggling with fixing problems without having to rely on magic and making the problem even worse in the process, and she is also a redeemed villain who was still going through redemption and was Twilight's student, so it's technically Twilight's job to be watching over her and make sure she lives up to her plan to change. Twilight being untrustworthy of Trixie and thinking she would be a bad influence on Starlight is pretty much justified.

** ''WebAnimation/TurnaboutStorm'' was surprisingly spot on about Trixie having a {{Tsundere}} side as well as her dropping her ThirdPersonPerson habit when emotionally distressed.
** In the [[ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDW comic book]] two-parter, ''[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDWIssue21To22 Manehatten Mysteries]]'', Trixie forms a bond with Babs for exactly the same reason she did with Starlight: both trying to get over their past actions and reform as better people. Also slightly [[HarsherInHindsight harsh]], though, since Trixie here was still nursing a bit of jealousy toward Twilight. Though interestingly, through all her appearances in the comic, she never once encounters Twilight. Likewise, she focuses on Twilight and only Twilight in this episode, and her actions, while petty, aren't that grandiose this time, with her showing remorse after nearly losing Starlight, so it evens out.

SANTBD is being merged with Anvilicious. Not examples as fails to explain how it's heavy handed.

* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: Twilight and Trixie's interactions demonstrate that it's easy to say you forgive someone you have a bad history with, but it can be difficult to actually make good on it and let go of those grudges (regardless of who started it). The angst that Starlight suffers in the last act also demonstrates that others in your life can be negatively affected by all this, even if that's not the intent.
