** It's almost as if the game wasn't supposed to be seen outside of first person. Strange how that works...

* NightmareFuel: When Faith falls to her death. It's accompanied by ''very'' realistic sounds and cinematics, to the point of inducing vertigo. Made even worse if the player is wearing the OculusRift, as they would literally see themselves falling to their death as opposed to just watching the monitor.

** Minor villain Ropeburn is [[CutsceneBoss even less climactic]], although he makes up for it in [[PressXToNotDie sheer frustration potential]]. To elaborate, Ropeburn charges at you with a metal pipe, and you are supposed to press the disarm button as it turns red (due to Runner Vision). The problem is that you need to actually press the disarm button quite early (just as the pipe starts to turn red). However, the frustration potential is totally subverted when you realize that the game doesn't punish you for pressing disarm before you're supposed to, so you can get through this scene 100% of the time by simply mashing the disarm button.

* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: With {{Portal}}, not that that's a bad thing though. Short game with complaints about said shortness, modernist white spaces, high velocity first person movement, themes of control and rebellion, female non-white protagonist, a song called "Still Alive".

* TheScrappy: [[spoiler: Jacknife for being a pretty generic, cocky villain.]]

** According to the developers, Catalyst will (most likely, since they haven't made a final decision) reboot the entire franchise, meaning that the first game will be considered non-canon. Some fans feel that the the reboot turns the entire original game pointless, while others believe that the plot was weak and should be forgotten.

* BrokenBase:
** The animated cutscenes. Some like the distinct style and think it adds to the atmosphere, others think it's a waste whent he game's engine looks so good and that it's a jarring shift in art style.
** There's some controversy over the Mirrors Edge prequel [[http://gamerant.com/mirrors-edge-2-writer-rhianna-pratchett/ not having the original game's writer]].
** When word began spreading that [[FeministFrequency Anita Sarkeesian]] may be involved in some fashion with the development of the upcoming prequel, not many fans were pleased, mostly due to Sarkeesian being seen as a very controversial figure, and that EA and DICE may be attempting to pander to a demographic (feminists with mindsets similar to Sarkeesian's) that were not even fans of the first game.

* ViewersAreMorons: The image that revealed the reboot's subtitle as ''Catalyst'' came with a definition of the word, in case anyone was unfamiliar.

* DemonicSpiders: The "[[SuperpoweredMooks Pursuit Cops]]" (almost) always avoidable, but the battle rifle-wielding bad guys aren't and can be nearly as frustrating to kill. They actually wear... [[GroinAttack protection]].
