** The Ant Caves level. Accessed by talking to the witch in the Enchanted Earth level, Dan gets shrunk down to insect size and has to wander into an anthill to find amber for her. Sounds simple, right? WRONG. The ant tunnels are pitch black, with only the light from some friendly sprites floating above you, and it's incredibly easy to get lost. At many times you can hear the ants scurrying around in the walls, before they crawl out and attack you. Then there's the boss of the level, the Ant Queen. Her only attacks are summoning soldier ants, spitting acid, or rearing up and ''[[HellIsThatNoise screaming]]'', making rocks fall from the ceiling. The kicker? At the start of the level, you find a book (likely placed there by the fairies you have to rescue) explicitly states that the nearby magical gateway was put there to keep ''something'' from getting out. And according to WordOfGod, this level was deliberately designed to be a silly version of an ''[[Franchise/{{Alien}}'' movie. ''A silly version'' of one of the most frightening moves of all time.

* ThatOneLevel: Once you leave the Graveyard, the game splits into three different paths: the "Pumpkin Path", leading to the Pumpkin Gorge, the "Asylum Path" leading to the Asylum, and the "Lake Path", leading to the lake. The Lake Path is the longest of the three and by far the hardest, containing a number of ThatOneLevel.
** "Pools of the Ancient Dead" is fairly small and has an easy to complete objective, but the imprecise controls can lead to some fatal mistakes as it's extremely easy to fall into the water and waste a whole life bottle. Getting the Chalice is pretty tough as well.
** "The Lake" is ''nightmarish''. Long, filled with tough enemies, hard to traverse and looks the same so it's easy to get lost.

Dan finally earning his place in the Hall of Heroes if he collects all the Chalices, complete with his own statue, and the gargoyle at the front door who was previously mocking him now congratulating him for his accomplishments.

** Shame is an excellent fuel. Also, you can't kill a skeleton with an arrow to the eye.
** There's nothing to say Dan was necessarily a wimp; he was the first one to get killed because he was one of the first to get involved in the battle.
** For that matter, why isn't Dan under Zarok's control? Not being commanded by Palethorn during the sequel kind of makes sense, given that he almost certainly didn't have the 100+ years of experience with the spell book that Zarok had, but why didn't Dan come under Zarok's thrall like all the other zombies during the first game?
*** It seems like the implication was that Dan was sort of locked in-between worlds. Unable to truly pass on to his eternal reward because, well, he didn't earn it.

* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Roughly 90% of the first game is this, but it's easily topped off by Zarok's first two attempts to go OneWingedAngel:
-->*POOF!* Awwwk-bok-bok-bok-bok!...No, that's not right...
--->*POOF!* *sheep bleats* [[{{Squick}} Ohh! ...Oh, not right now!]]
** Topped off by his OWA form being a rather anemic-looking dragon with his own head on it, and his "You Are Doomed" speech being interruped by more chicken clucking. This troper lost the final battle the first time around simply due to laughing too hard to play or even pause.
-->'''NONE SHALL DEFEAT THE MIGHTY ZAROK!!''' Awwwk-bokbokbokbokb--A-'''HEM'''...so prepare to die.
** In the original game, the cutscene after escaping Peregrine's Castle. Dan's scream is ''priceless''.

** To clarify its Game Breaker status, Woden's Brand can dispatch anything short of Shadow Demons and bosses ''in a single hit''. If you have the patience to get this weapon at the earliest possible time (the first time you go to Gallowmere Plains), you will use it for the rest of the game. Every weapon you get from the Hall of Heroes will rot in your inventory while you swing Woden's Brand around. Excluding the parts where you're forced to use other tactics.
