* ArcFatigue: Pretty much everything after the sixth round. The show starts adding more and more filler and padding which prolongs both the monotonous TournamentArc as well as Snow's rescue. Compared to the manga where she was only gone a volume and a half, she's missing 26 episodes here. It's mildly annoying watching it now, but imagine watching the show as it was airing. That's half of year of mostly filler. And then there's the Ghost Chess arc, which is loved by YaoiFangirls and people who wanted a better resolution to Phantom's character arc (that was anti-climatic in the manga) but disliked by others. The last 7 episodes are generally considered to end the series on a high note, though.
* {{Base Breaker}}: Snow is a very divisive character to say the least. There are many who see her as a scrappy for getting in the way of Ginta and whoever they ship him with and for getting captured on screen at least twice (four times in the anime), but she does have her fans.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: The English anime's OP.

Then the next episode cuts to them already at their destination and the majority of the series is spent on a fighting tournament. This wouldn't be so bad if the battles weren't such a step down from those of FlameOfRecca. Fortunately, the anime fixes some of these things by adding filler arcs that don't have to do with the tournament and the aftermath which included the Ghost Chest arc and the final arc which had a much more satisfying ending than the original manga.
** While the ending being superior is a majority opinion to be sure, there are those who'd argue the filler detracted from the show more than it added. Removing this whole line because it doesn\'t match the Fan Preferred Couple. You can only list one couple unless there is a very good reason. The three yaoi pairings listed are all tied because of Alviss\' status of being paired up with everyone. There is no point listing Ginta/Dorothy and Ginta/Snow when the latter is controversial anyway and is the official couple.

** Basically, disregarding OCs and self-inserts, the most popular ships seem to be GintaXAlviss, GintaXPhantom, AlvissXPhantom, or some combination thereof, though some might argue the Yaoi fans are an extremely vocal minority. As far as heterosexual pairings go, Ginta is almost exclusively shipped with Snow, and Dorothy is near-universally paired with Nanashi. Jack is either left alone or paired with Pano, or rare cases with Snow. Alviss is... Unsurprisingly almost never paired heterosexually, but in the rare instance he is, it's usually Belle.

The Ghost Chess arc was not just loved by Yaoi Fangirls. This arc tied loose ends the manga failed to do with Alma, gave a closing to Phantom\'s character arc and developed Alviss as a character along with giving Snow something to do to redeem her after being captured most of the time.

Deleting this line from Broken Base because it goes from stating Snow as being popular according to the manga poll to just outright attacking yaoi fangirls and accusing them of being a vocal minority

This line is changed to Distressed Damsel because its not a lie that she needs to be rescued. She gets captured twice (four times in the anime with one with the two times in the anime not lasting a whole episode because she gets out on her own). Extending the rescue arc made the viewers who watched the anime assume she needed to be rescued for a longer period of time compared to the manga where she was gone for a volume and a half.

A Creator\'s Pet by laconic definition is a character that is loved by the writers but hated by the fanbase. Not only is Dorothy loved by the fanbase but having her feelings on Ginta expanded on in an Adaption Expansion. Dorothy doesn\'t lose in the manga at all and in a series that expands more on Dorothy in the anime doesn\'t make her overpowered compared to everyone else (and she has lost her share of battles in the filler arcs). This trope overall just seems to be bashing Dorothy.

* CreatorsPet: Dorothy. In the anime anyway. There's a lot of scenes added in the anime about her that weren't in the manga, she's overpowered even worse than the rest of the team to the point of pretty much never losing, even during filler arcs where everyone else tends to lose. She's exploited to hell and back for Fanservice but the real kicker is that her status as Ginta's secondary LoveInterest is played a bit more seriously (even though [[spoiler: Snow/Koyuki ends up winning in the end]]) whereas in the manga it was little more than a running gag. It's clear SOMEONE in charge of the anime may have liked her too much.

*** [[spoiler: Of course he was possessed by the Orb, the main villain of the series.]]]]
* TooCoolToLive : Played with both Alan and [[spoiler: Danna]], the former is much stronger than the main cast, but a flaw in order to not make him too cool and [[spoiler: the latter was possessed by the BigBad, only to be revived at the end of the series]], Chimera plays this straight though, only losing because Dorothy is [[ManipulativeBitch too witty about disrupting her concentration]]

Cut for having no context; if anyone wants to re-add, discuss it here first.

* CompleteMonster: While Phantom is a BaseBreaker, most Chess Pieces including Halloween, Girom, Rapunzel, and [[spoiler: King]] are these.
** Rapunzel and Girom do have a sole positive quality, they obviously care about eachother at the very least, Girom seemed pretty distressed about his sister's death.

* TheUntwist: Quite a few "plot twists" in this series are fairly obvious if your GenreSavvy, mainly because the foreshadowing is a little too thick. Some of these include, [[spoiler: Ginta's dad being Danna, obvious because his father had gone missing six years ago... exactly when the last War Game happened. Koyuki and Snow being connected in some way, granted the exact nature of the connection differs between the manga and anime but nobody is pretending that the fact they were connected was in any way some kind of surprise. The Queen being Diana, and Diana being Dorothy's sister... I mean just look at her! They looked too similar for the revelation of them being related to be a surprise. The only plot twists that aren't untwists are ones that border on ShockingSwerve, such as Babbo being the spirit of the previous Caldean Elder... because nothing hinted at that earlier.]]

** Ginta sort of zigzags this in general after Snow is captured. Sometimes he can't get her out of his head and other times he seems to forget that she even needs rescuing. He does legitimately angst after she dies, but tries to hide it from everyone... nobody buys it.
