* ArcFatigue: Instead of moving the plot forward, the show keeps introducing girls to Ichika's harem and putting oto much focus on the harem antics. [[spoiler:By the end of season 2, the heroes are no closer to stopping Phantom Task than they were at the beginning, and the ''World Purge'' [=OVA=] is just an extended romantic fantasy almost entirely disconnected to the main plot.]] Not helping at all are ScheduleSlip{{s}} caused by the author's health problems. As of 2016, the franchise hasn't released any new content.

* IronWoobie: You gotta hand it to Ichika. He's thrown into a situation he is woefully unprepared for, his BattleHarem won't take "no" for an answer, a terrorist organization that wants to kill him and take his [=IS=] core and the guy still manages to remain cheerful and optimistic.

** Among the members of Ichika's harem, Charlotte seems to be the fan favorite. See FanPreferredCouple. On top of being a sweet girl, her ability to excel with an older IS endears her to many.
** Laura is also quite popular as well, owing in large part to her close friendship with Charlotte and the fact that so much of the comedy surrounding her comes from her tendency to make everything SeriousBusiness.

* {{Faux Action G|irl}}uy: A male instance of this trope. Despite being the main character and receiving training from multiple tutors, Ichika manages to lose nearly every 1 on 1 fight he's in.

* AmericansHateTingle: Season 2 was overwhelmingly considered to be a disgrace by most American fans. In Japan, the series sold like hotcakes and was just as popular as the first season.

* GameBreaker:
** Chifuyu Orimura, aka ''Brunhilde I'' - the first Mondo Grosso Champion. She's just a teacher now at the Academy, and seems to be content with it, but if her history and reputation is anything to go by, you ''don't'' want be on the business end of her in an IS suit (or, as one pilot found out in Volume 8 of the light novel, even without one). [[spoiler: The first time she showed up in an IS, presumably at age 14, she DID break the entire world's balance of power. Now she is 24 with a lot more experience...]] She herself seemed to lampshaded this in Volume 8 too, when gazing at her frozen IS.
--->'''Chifuyu''': When you wake up, it'll definitely be the decisive battle...
** There's also Laura's ''Schwarzer Regen'' -- in one-on-one combat, it's pretty much unbeatable. It has a massive rail gun as its main armament, it has an energy blade on each wrist, and it has remote-controlled tethers much like the Slash Harkens from ''Anime/CodeGeass'' to restrain opponents so she can shoot them more easily. To top it all off, she has an impenetrable barrier that can block anything as long as there's only one attacker.
** And then there's Tatenashi's ''Mysterious Lady'', which does away with standard kinetic weapons and lasers of the existing IS units in favor of [[{{Nanomachines}} nanotech-weaponized water]]. If one wants a sizable comparison of this IS to any HumongousMecha ever introduced in Anime, just these two words: [[spoiler:[[Anime/TurnAGundam Moonlight Butterfly]].]]
** In the second season's final episode, [[spoiler: Madoka's ''Kurokishi'' and Squall's ''Golden Dawn'' are downright unstoppable. It took a literal DeusExMachina to deal any damage to them, and even then it was merely a minor setback.]]

* StopHelpingMe: When Houki, Rin, and Cecilia all try to explain to Ichika how to use the IS with their {{Technobabble}}, it only serves to confuse him. On the other hand, Charles offers to duel Ichika, and after soundly [[CurbStompBattle stomping him]], he offers some tips on Ichika's weaknesses and explains things that makes it easy for him to understand. He also helps train Ichika on using a rifle, and seems a bit too friendly, causing the girls to get quite [[ClingyJealousGirl jealous]].
