* GameBreaker:
** Chifuyu Orimura, aka ''Brunhilde I'' - the first Mondo Grosso Champion. She's just a teacher now at the Academy, and seems to be content with it, but if her history and reputation is anything to go by, you ''don't'' want be on the business end of her in an IS suit (or, as one pilot found out in Volume 8 of the light novel, even without one). [[spoiler: The first time she showed up in an IS, presumably at age 14, she DID break the entire world's balance of power. Now she is 24 with a lot more experience...]] She herself seemed to lampshaded this in Volume 8 too, when gazing at her frozen IS.
--->'''Chifuyu''': When you wake up, it'll definitely be the decisive battle...
** There's also Laura's ''Schwarzer Regen'' -- in one-on-one combat, it's pretty much unbeatable. It has a massive rail gun as its main armament, it has an energy blade on each wrist, and it has remote-controlled tethers much like the Slash Harkens from ''Anime/CodeGeass'' to restrain opponents so she can shoot them more easily. To top it all off, she has an impenetrable barrier that can block anything as long as there's only one attacker.
** And then there's Tatenashi's ''Mysterious Lady'', which does away with standard kinetic weapons and lasers of the existing IS units in favor of [[{{Nanomachines}} nanotech-weaponized water]]. If one wants a sizable comparison of this IS to any HumongousMecha ever introduced in Anime, just these two words: [[spoiler:[[Anime/TurnAGundam Moonlight Butterfly]].]]
** In the second season's final episode, [[spoiler: Madoka's ''Kurokishi'' and Squall's ''Golden Dawn'' are downright unstoppable. It took a literal DeusExMachina to deal any damage to them, and even then it was merely a minor setback.]]

* StopHelpingMe: When Houki, Rin, and Cecilia all try to explain to Ichika how to use the IS with their {{Technobabble}}, it only serves to confuse him. On the other hand, Charles offers to duel Ichika, and after soundly [[CurbStompBattle stomping him]], he offers some tips on Ichika's weaknesses and explains things that makes it easy for him to understand. He also helps train Ichika on using a rifle, and seems a bit too friendly, causing the girls to get quite [[ClingyJealousGirl jealous]].

* ValuesDissonance: [[http://bato.to/read/_/273496/infinite-stratos-yuuki-homura_ch10_by_rapid-switch/16 There's a moment in the second manga adaptation]] where Rin points chopsticks at Houki while bragging about how she will win the next tournament. Ichika's internal monologue chastises Rin for being uncultured. This might not seem like a big deal for those unfamiliar with the context, but in many East Asian countries, pointing chopsticks at someone is extremely rude as they resemble incense sticks and it can be interpreted as a funerary symbol. Also could overlap with UnfortunateImplications, since Rin is ''Chinese'', and Chinese are normally stereotyped as uneducated hillbillies in both Japanese and other countries' media.

* DeaderThanDisco: As one of the {{Trope Codifier}}s for the BattleHarem genre of light novels (while ''LightNovel/ACertainMagicalIndex'' came before, it had more focus on action than SliceOfLife school hijinks), both the novels and the first season of the anime were well-received, and the series was considered pretty innovative as far as HaremSeries go (for example, having the main character be a capable fighter rather than an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent [[ThisLoserIsYou loser]]). Thanks to the [[SeasonalRot drop in quality of both the novels and the anime]], especially in [[AmericansHateTingle the west]], most of the fanbase dried up, and [[FollowTheLeader the large number of works that copied more than a bit from the series]] didn't help one bit. Today, whenever the series is brought up, it's usually to be blamed for the trend of mediocre PanderingToTheBase light novel adaptations that plague anime in TheNewTens.

Tatenashi. You either find her the best girl in the series or just a stupid MarySue. No middle ground!
** Houki is another one. For some, she is one of the best girls of the show with an adorable personality and produces funny scenes with Ichika. Others just despise her saying she is just a generic {{tsundere}}.

** Houki for being a terrible Tsundere and a so-so pilot that seems to get special treatment.
** Tatenashi may count due to her late entry and sueish antics, but some just ignore her existence.
