* MoralEventHorizon: Subverted by Haruhi herself in Sigh when she spikes Mikuru's drink and leaves her open to possible rape. When she has Itsuki try to kiss her on camera, Kyon snaps and comes DANGEROUSLY close to assaulting her--and would've done so had Itsuki not restrained him. This close brush with Kyon's fist is supposedly what leads Haruhi to transition from Jerkass to JerkWithAHeartOfGold and become more sympathetic as the chronology goes on.

Removing Character Alignment by The Great Alignment Debate. Also, to be an Karma Houdini you needs be a villain.

* CharacterAlignment
** Haruhi: At heart probably ChaoticGood, as she simply awkwardly wants to find a way to enjoy life, and that everybody should try to break the mundane monotony and try to enjoy themselves too, taking an active role in organising events; but in practice in-between this and ChaoticNeutral. She is very obtuse and self-centered PokeThePoodle type of obnoxious, and is willing to do strange things if it may yield interesting results, but is almost completely harmless/is within the comparatively "normal" range compared to most other media protagonists out there, and her more questionable acts are driven by not noticing, not any ill will towards anybody. However, of late she has begun to notice how she affects people around her, and will hopefully stop her KickTheDog moments towards poor kindhearted Mikuru.
** Kyon: NeutralGood. As much as he may try to keep to himself and obey society's expectations, he'll subvert the hell out of the rules if he has to for the greater good.
** Yuki: LawfulNeutral. Her raison d'etre is to obey orders without regard to the consequences (viz. Endless Eight). As she develops more of a personality later, she leans toward NeutralGood.
** Mikuru: LawfulGood. The only thing her dislike of trouble and her obedience to her superiors ever conflicts with is the possibility of someone she cares about being hurt. She frequently places herself in the role of a sacrifice for the good of others.
** Itsuki: About as close to TrueNeutral as you can get; his actions depend vastly on the situation.
***

* NeverLiveItDown: Haruhi is never going to get away from the reputation she established in the beginning; even if she gets CharacterDevelopment from it, some fans will continue to see her as a CompleteMonster that never defrosts. Then again, her status as KarmaHoudini doesn't help...

** Kyon probably doesn't like singing, but the truth is all his songs ROCK.

** Yuki and especially Mikuru get a bit of this as well. Apparently, it's due to backlash for Haruhi being OutOfFocus in the last novels.

* SpotlightStealingSquad: Yuki. She's not nearly as bad as other examples but does have an entire damn movie is created centering around her. Guess being the author's favorite character helps.

** JerkassWoobie: Before the start of the series Haruhi painfully realises that her experiences are mundane and not anything special (which is what she desires the most in her life), and in her quest to make her life special, goes on the hunt for aliens, time travellers and ESPers after some inspiration from Kyon. This leads to her general bluntness, and her obsession with cosplaying Mikuru. And all the exciting things she's hoped for ARE in her life, but she's LockedOutOfTheLoop!
** StoicWoobie: Yuki.

Admittedly, the old themes had three full years to become ingrained into the collective fan-consciousness, and the ending theme especially achieved godlike levels of Mikuru Asahina", ep. 00 (the first episode).popularity, spawning thousands of fan-made videos and animations. Fortunately the creators of the anime were seemingly aware that they could never top themselves, and avoided the temptation to try simply by coming up with something Completely Different (neither of the new themes feature any dancing whatsoever, and their visual styles are quite distinct from both each other and the old themes).

She gets uprooted from her friends, family and timeline, is thrown into a culture alien to her without any of the technology she's used to in the future, where she is constantly manipulated, kept out of the loop and emotionally abused by none other than . Add to this the fact that before being sent back in time, she underwent mental conditioning preventing her from ever revealing anything details of her old life to any of her new friends, no matter how much she might want to. And all of this abuse came from the people she's supposed to be saving.

Trope was redefined for In Universe use only.

* AdaptationDecay: Both manga; the first one was just a lot more unbearable.
** Sigh had a bit of this in the scene where Haruhi was bullying Mikuru and Kyon blows up at her. In the anime, Haruhi hits Mikuru on the back of the head for 'training'. Mikuru's relative lack of reaction and the light-ness of the blows make it seem as though Kyon's subsequent actions are a bit over the top. In the novels Haruhi is vicously beating on the back of Mikuru's head in order to knock a contact lens out of her head like in the movies, and Kyon's anger is much more justified. The toy comment is the same in both, and is the final straw (in a long line of cruelties) for Kyon.

** The novels have even more, with countless throwaway references to astrophysics and at least one in-depth discussion (and illustrations) of Euler's planar graph formula. And let's not even start about the time travel incidents that reach a complexity where you just want to overlook it. Koizumi even talks about time-lines and alternate realities at the SAME TIME, with some explanatory VISUALS.
*** Also, Dissociation mentions Yuki reading a book about "Mathematicians, Artists, Musicians, and their Interrelations". This is probably "Godel, Escher, Bach, an Eternal Golden Braid.", by Douglas Hofstadter. The book deals heavily with recursion, parallel worlds, and uncertainty. Suspiciously Apropos Literature or what?
** Some careful observation reveals a bit of philosophy thrown in, although I'm not sure why Kyon ascribes to Albert Camus' way of thinking.
** The rapid-fire speech capabilities of Yuki Nagato and Ryoko Asakura are actually human speech sped up 400%-500% and reversed. A few interesting things arose after decoding:
*** Yuki appears to be speaking in SQL.
*** Asakura asks Yuki, during their fight: "You love Kyon-kun, don't you? I know you have realized it."

* MemeticBadass: According to fans, Mikuru's EyeBeam attack is one of the most destructive forces in existence.
** Considering how many different variants on the "Mikuru Beam" ended up coming out of her eye (and eventually sealed away by Yuki), this is entirely possible.
