* CounterpartComparison:
** Because of similar motives and while attempting to use her son in her plans (only to be rebelled against), Nyra can be compared to [[Disney/TheLionKingIISimbasPride Zira]].
** The above has led to Nyroc/Coryn being compared to Kovu. What really drives the comparison home is getting a facial scar from being scratched by his mother after refusing to go along with her insane plans anymore, one that also makes him look even more like a figure he ironically just rejected.

Not YMMV and MB cleanup.

* {{Flanderization}}: The puffins. In Book Two, they're portrayed as fairly knowledgeable about foul weather and other things they have to deal with on a day-to-day basis, which really helps the Band despite the puffins' insistence that they're really quite dumb and unhelpful. Gylfie is supportive and comments that their only problem is low self-esteem. From the puffins' next appearance (Book Six) on, their stupidity is taken UpToEleven to the point where one of them even [[TooDumbToLive forgets to hold onto the fish he's caught]], and Gylfie is disdainful of them. This is [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] with Dumpy the Fifteenth in the final book.

* {{Narm}}: A lot of the made-up vocab is hard to take seriously, especially the curse words. Just try cussing someone out with terms like "sprink" and "racdrops" without sounding utterly ridiculous.
* NarmCharm: [[TheSmartGuy Otulissa]] chewing out [[ObstructiveBureaucrat Dewlap]]. There's no way for the sentence "SPRINK ON YOUR SPRONK!" to ever ''not'' sound extremely stupid, but the context makes it quite satisfying nonetheless.

* MarySue: Nyroc is technically a canon Purity Sue (Or MartyStu in this case). He was raised to be evil but a single owl turned him good. He's in some way [[spoiler:related to Hoole]], a legendary hero. His flaws tend to be small or annoying, like most Sues of his nature.

** At first it seems kind of strange that the author would have a second set of villains in addition to the Nazis, who operated in a very similar manner, but with a different ideology...then it hits you that they're the Communists, and the whole world is basically pre-WWII Germany.

* FanonDiscontinuity: YMMV, of course, but many fans think that everything after "The Burning"--when Nyroc came on the scene--is inferior to the first few books.
* HighOctaneNightmareFuel: The reason why owlets captured by St. Aggie's never grow proper wing feathers. [[spoiler:They use ''vampire bats'' to suck out their blood every month]]. To say nothing of all the MindControl used by them and the Pure Ones.
** Some of the FamilyUnfriendlyViolence, which is often described in rather graphic detail. Particularly [[spoiler:in ''The Hatchling'', where Nyra ''rips out and eats another owl's heart'', which is so traumatic it makes Nyroc do a full-blown HeelFaceTurn]]. If there is ever a sequel to TheMovie, the developers will be hard-pressed to keep it PG.
