Jessica's interest in a fashion empire had the potential to mess up SNSD's endorsement deals, their main source of income, really badly, as it would be treated as a rival company by sponsors who would either withdraw their offers towards SNSD, or simply not hire Jessica in the photoshoots, which would lower the SNSD brand value significantly and their potential profit. SM Entertainment would not see any cent from Jessica's personal revenue either. Booting Jessica and smear her image to save the product seemed like a pragmatic decision.

*** This is a good reason why Jessica's departure has split [=SONEs=] in regards to Tiffany - many say if someone had to leave the group, it would have been better if it was BaseBreaker Tiffany (who many feel "adds nothing to the group", and has a very controversial voice/singing style) than Jessica, who was arguably a better singer (although she has a very polarizing voice herself). Arguments get nasty since [=SONEs=] have noticed the person who profits the most from Jessica's departure is Tiffany. Other members such as Sooyoung, Yoona and Sunny have profited somewhat from her departure too (mostly by getting more lines and screen-time), but they have escaped the hate because they have been mostly stuck in the background during their time in the group, and they put effort into trying to make up for Jessica not being there, while Tiffany's ad-libs and "raps" have always been controversial.
