** Sephiroth is the BigBad of the game, so it's fitting that he gets his slice of this. This pleasant fellow went AxCrazy when he found out he was the product of genetic experiments and thought he was actually the artificially created last member of the Cetra, an ancient people, and proceeded to burn down Cloud's home town because he just happened to be there when he found that out, killing many people including your Tifa's father (and presumably Cloud's mother, though Cloud never brings that up). He later finds out he's actually the artificially created son of the CosmicHorror alien monster that nearly wiped the Cetra, and the planet, out, and so decides to [[OmnicidalManiac destroy the world]] and steal it's life force to become a [[AGodAmI god]]. He also messes with Cloud's memories and uses him to set his apoocalyptic plan in motion as revenge for Cloud nearly killing him for the aforementioned town burning thing. Along the way he finds time to psychically possess his abomination mother and use her/it to perform a massacre or two disguised as him, which also means he turned his own mother into his slave. Oh, and he [[InnocentFlowerGirl kills Aerith]]. Permanently. Sorry for [[ItWasHisSled the spoiler]]. On the other hand, his rather solid FreudianExcuse (the whole JENOVA thing, as well as basically Genesis revealing that information to him in the first place) would make trying to label him as such somewhat debatable.

* BaseBreaker: there are still a ''lot'' of people who fanatically praise it for being the best game of all time and just as many who think it's unoriginal, overrated, and hate the fact that the former group refuses to shut up about it. Goes double for Sephiroth in particular.

** The main game itself.Oddly enough, fans just don't seem to be able to grasp the concept that ''FinalFantasyVII'' was popular for two reasons: it was the first RPG to receive major advertising, and it was the first RPG to actively sell itself to the mainstream through said advertising. Neither of which makes it a bad game at all, but don't try to convince someone who hates it of that.
** See also HypeBacklash; many older fans of the series as a whole don't think the game is ''bad'' by any stretch of the imagination, but think its so incredibly overrated due to the popularity, and often get so exasperated that they end up using hyperbole to make "I thought it was okay, no real problems but nothing spectacular, and dislike how the great amount of advertising and mainstream nature make people prefer it over games that I personally enjoyed more and found to be better made" sound like "I hated it and wish it would die in fire".

* LoveItOrHateIt - Many Final Fantasy fans love it for it being their "first RPG", bringing the RPG genre into the mainstream, or for [[PerverseSexualLust other]] reasons. Other Final Fantasy fans hate it for [[RuinedFOREVER ruining the franchise]] [[ItsPopularNowItSucks by making it popular]], or drastically changing some of the traditions the Final Fantasy series kept, or for simply being overrated, over-promoted, and over-sequeled.

** I'd agree with you, should you have claimed any another "emo" character was not emo. However... he's ''punishing himself by sleep'' for his actions (not even his fault) in his ''DarkAndTroubledPast.''

** A lot of people complain about how Cloud was nothing but a whiny angstypants. In fact, Cloud wasn't particularly angsty at all until his CharacterDerailment in Advent Children.

* HateDumb: The HypeBacklash below goes a [[{{Understatement}} wee bit]] too far at times. Goes along perfectly with the FanDumb- no matter what happens, both sides are complete idiots arguing about [[SeriousBusiness something pointless]] with unimaginable passion.

** Really? Most people haven't played FFVII where Hojo on Disc 2 explicitly states that the reason the Clones weren't gathering to Jenova's body but instead Jenova and the Clones were going to the Crater is because of Sephiroth's will (who was at the crater the whole time)? Thought that was pretty clear to be honest.

* PortingDisaster - Not as bad as some games, but the PC version has a true MissingMomentOfAwesome because it made the jump to a 100%-{{MIDI}} soundtrack. However, this meant that the choral track of [[CrowningMusicOfAwesome One Winged Angel]] was lost for some people because it was in a format that not every sound card could play.

* TheScrappy - Cait Sith is an intentional one, as he joins your team against your will, [[TierInducedScrappy has ]][[SoOKItsAverage unimpressive]][[TierInducedScrappy stats]], {{Limit Break}}s that are unpredictable at best (granted, one possibility is instant victory, but that occurrence is freakishly rare, and ''another'' possibility is instant death for your own party), and players' dislike of him only increases when you find out [[spoiler: he is actually a robot made by Reeve, who is holding Marlene hostage]].

* {{Squick}}: Hojo's plan to breed Aerith with Red XIII. Also, whether the headless body with the [[EyesDoNotBelongThere squid-eyeball-nipple]] in Shinra HQ had this effect on the player or not, it certainly did on Barret.
** It did? It just seemed like it ticked him off more than anything.

* TheWesley: Yuffie is probrably the least liked character, aside from Cait-Sith. That said, she has appeared in almost (if not as many) spin-offs and sequels as Cloud.

* SeinfeldIsUnfunny - The game created, popularized, or deconstructed many RPG tropes and conventions that see popular use today, but people who weren't there to experience the game at launch tend to see it as a dated ClicheStorm. Even the deconstructions became tropes in and of themselves.

* ShipToShipCombat - [[FanDumb The game came out in 1997. Over a decade later, there are still websites, forums, and furious debates dedicated to saying Cloud loves Aerith rather than Tifa]].(WordOfGod confirms that Cloud loves Tifa, and the 10th Anniversary Ultimania guide even proved that a sex scene between the two had been drafted at the end of the game, but Kitase altered the final version to be simply suggestive with a fade to black instead.)

** Too many to name. Among other things, with the right Materia combination, it was possible to throw yourself into a loop of [[LastDiscMagic Knights of the Round]] until whatever you were facing was dead. This includes ''the final boss''. And the [[BonusBoss Bonus Bosses]]. And [[MemeticBadass Batman]].

** Scarlet and Heidegger are totally okay with testing HumongousMecha of mass destruction against... well, anything. They converse about two things in the game: weapons that kill people, and the funds to build weapons that kill people. Scarlett is responsible for what happened to North Coral, Barret, and Dyne and Heidegger was responsible for the destruction of Sector 7 along with another CompleteMonster listed bellow.
** President Shinra runs a MegaCorp that makes it profits off energy that is actually the life energy of the planet, as well as all beings on said planet living or dead- thats right; his company is actually built on selling ''souls''. His MoralEventHorizon is destroying Sector 7- an entire town- to wipe the rebel/ terrorist group based there, and then blaming it on said group. While listening to [[WickedCultured classical music]]. Also, given how eerily emotionless and cold Rufus is, growing up with this guy for a father probably wasn't the ideal childhood....

* HoYay[=/=]NoYay: Cloud and Zack. Plus the option for Cloud to kiss Don Corneo and go on a date with Barrett...and the gay hottub scene.

* HarsherInHindsight - On the Shinra boat, Aerith asks Cloud about the Highwind airship at Junon, and the player is given the option of having Cloud tell her he'll take her to see it someday. Additionally, while in the Temple of the Ancients, Aerith says to Cloud, "Don't worry. Someday we'll look back on these hard times and laugh." [[ItWasHisSled Considering what happens shortly afterward]]...
