* TakeThatScrappy: There was a JerkAss man that ran a rigged shooting arcade game, cheating players out of their money, and not giving them their prizes just because it "wasn't knocked over" So when Mr. Gru blows up the arcade, and leaves the man in '''extreme''' pain, it's hard not to say, "he got what was coming to him."

* RetroactiveRecognition: Hey, the carnival barker is [[Disney/WreckItRalph Fix-It Felix]]!

** Most "villain becomes a hero" stories have a hero to rise up against them. ''Disney/WreckItRalph'' had Fix-it Felix, and ''WesternAnimation/{{Megamind}}'' had Metro Man. This movie doesn't appear to have any hero to rise up against Gru. Law enforcement is [[PoliceAreUseless mostly lacking]] in this universe, and the Anti-Villain League wasn't introduced until [[WesternAnimation/DespicableMe2 the sequel]], where Gru gives up villainy entirely.

** Pops up frequently between the Minions, as they are confirmed to be all male.

* UncannyValley: The CGI Is noticeably More Rubbery Instead Of Smoothness Like In The [[WesternAnimation/DespicableMe2 Sequel]] Causing Some Character designs especially with The humans And the minions to look plastic (and kinda Of) Weird Looking At times

** Apparently the shrink ray was created in (and stolen from) North Korea.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: The minions, to a degree. They're either the series's {{ensemble darkhorse}}s or [[TheScrappy scrappies]], based on how much (or how little) you enjoy their brand of physical comedy.

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Inverted with the Minions. In the first film, they were very liked, and became very popular, but they started to become hated with [[ItsPopularNowItSucks all the popularity and overuse they obtained]]. In ''Minions'' and in ''Despicable Me 3'' they were accused of ruining the franchise and stealing the spotlight that should have gone to Gru and the girls.

* BreakthroughHit: While not groundbreaking in terms of story and animation, the film was able to establish Universal as a new and capable player in the animation world. Something that would be solidfied with the success of its sequels and spinoffs a few years later.

** Gru's presentation[[labelnote:Explanation]] Gru presents a slideshow to Mr. Perkins in an attempt to get funding for his scheme, with the girls messing with the third part. "I fly to the moon... * OneSceneWonder: [[GreaterScopeVillain Mr. Perkins]] has less than ten minutes of screen time in the whole movie, but he makes a hell of an impression. Some fans were even [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter disappointed he never appeared in any of the sequels.]]

** The revelation that [[spoiler: Vector is Mr. Perkins' son]] doesn't really amount to anything aside from [[spoiler: Vector finding out that Gru stole back the shrink ray]]. This is made even more jarring by the fact that [[spoiler: Perkins]] does not appear any later in the movie.

* OneSceneWonder: Miss Hattie and Mr. Perkins only appear in three scenes for the entire movie.

* CounterpartComparison:
** Unsurprisingly, the Minions have been compared to the VideoGame/{{Ra|vingRabbids}}bbids. Both species are aggressive, mean-spirited, prone to {{Slapstick}}, [[SpeakingSimlish speak gibberish]], there are many of them with some of them being unique (like the ButtMonkey Professor from the Rabbids and Kevin from the Minions) and huge BaseBreakingCharacter status. The most distinct difference is that the Minions are a lot calmer, friendlier, and smarter. The Minions have also been compared to the VideoGame/{{Worms}} for similar reasons (and that they both love using weapons).
** Margo, Edith, and Agnes have been compared to the WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls. You have the headstrong leader (Blossom/Margo), the troublemaker (Buttercup/Edith), and the sweetest one of all (Bubbles/Agnes).
