* UnfortunateImplications: As [[http://roosterillusionreviews.com/2014/01/07/the-tuesday-zone-eldritch-adaptations-part-11-or-dagon-stuart-gordons-most-recent-failure/ this review]] notes,
-->Seriously, there are three female characters in Dagon, one being inexplicably naked and trying to have sex with the narrator; another, the main character’s girlfriend who is tied to an altar—naked—and stabbed a bunch; and the third, a friend who kills herself after she is raped. Maybe I’m a broken record, but after a while the lack of female characters who don’t have to pick two from the “naked, killed, or raped” bag becomes egregious to a point that even an inattentive viewer should start getting upset. Also, Gordon’s love for violently brutalizing naked women says a lot about how he thinks of them as human beings. That is to say, of course, that he doesn’t.

* SpecialEffectFailure: Near the end of the movie, Uxia throws off her robe and rushes over to Paul in a desperate effort to stop him from killing himself. Unfortunately, in doing so she becomes a hilariously bad CGI model that looks a lot like the infamous Scorpion King from Film/TheMummyReturns. This is all the more notable given the excellent practical effects the movie employs everywhere else.

** Paul finding out that he's half Deep One and attempting to immolate himself in response is a powerful moment. Unfortunately, it is immediately undermined by Uxia throwing off her robe, turning into a hilariously bad CGI model, and sort of ... pinwheeling her way over to Paul to yank him into the water.

** Imboca's nameless [[SinisterMinister priest]], and [[BigBad Uxia]]'s second-in-command, is a frozen-cold cultist with a seemingly singular fondness for ColdBloodedTorture.

Not a YMMV trope

* EldritchAbomination: Compared to Lovecraft's later works, the creature at the end of the short story is relatively tame in appearance and action, making the narrator's GoMadFromtheRevelation reaction seem a bit excessive.

* NightmareRetardant: In an odd, retrospective way. In the year 2016 we obviously would have noticed if an army of fish people had taken over the world. Since they were building their forces in 1931, that leaves 3 possibilities: 1) They're doing it really, REALLY slowly, 2) They were stopped before we even noticed them, or 3) The narrator let his Xenophobic view skew his interpretation, and they just wanted to live in peace (presumably when he went to [[spoiler: live with them]] at the end, and started discussing conquest of the world, they all stared at him like he was crazy).
