* TheyJustDidntCare: The only explanation for some of the human names. Which makes sense, as Himaruya never intended for them to exist, but the fans insisted. Applies to both Himaruya's name choices and the english-speaking fanbase's romanizations thereof. Vargas is a Spanish name not Italian, Tino is uncommon in Finland but Timo is very common, Weillschmidt is not a name but Beilschmidt is, it's Eliza''b''eta and not Elizaveta, and Toris is a very popular name in Lithuania... for dogs.
** That being said, the last one [[FridgeBrilliance might make more]] [[ButtMonkey sense than you think]]...
*** During the bunny updates of the 2013 Halloween Event, Lithuania wears dog ears.
** A few of the human names have actually shown up in at least two strips, one being Spain's April Fools' news show. Another strip has America referred to as "Alfred", but as he was acting in a commercial, it's probable that it was only his character's name.
** Granted, the human names are technically WordOfGod and that Himaruya still offers suggestions for them. Such as with Liechtenstein.

* RealWomenDontWearDresses: Mostly done by the HetIsEw yaoi fangirls and the "fandom feminists" part of the fandom who seem to dislike Hungary for going from tomboy to NinjaMaid and falling for Austria, accuse Seychelles of being a Mary Sue and SatelliteLoveInterest for being the main character in Gakuen Hetalia or, in the most extreme cases, think that all women in Hetalia are weak and a misrepresentation of the gender.

** Denmark alone has lots of it. Earlier portrayals showed him as [[BlondGuysAreEvil evil]] with a BloodLust in battle, or a PsychopathicManchild who acts as a PervertDad to Norway. He was also subjected to RonTheDeathEater treatment in fanworks that take place in the time period of Sweden's rebellion. Now that more of his personality has been revealed, he's either a BumblingDad to the Nordics, or a LovableSexManiac. "Mathias" seems to be the [[FanNickname most common human name]] for him in the Western fandom.

* SelectiveSquick: There are some people who like the humor and the idea of the series, but are scared off by the HoYay.
** Meanwhile, there are others that are drawn to the HoYay but might find some of the UnfortunateImplications surrounding the show's interpretations of various historical events a little too disturbing.
** ''Meanwhile'', meanwhile, there are others who are fine with the HoYay but squicked by the [[NotBloodSiblings vaguely-incestuous]] pairings (US/UK, Switzerland/Liechtenstein, China/Japan, etc) or shota (Chibiromano/Spain, Chibiamerica/England, etc).

* AmericansHateTingle: While there are definitely Western fans who like Japan, there are also a sizable number of fans who are 'meh' about him at best and brand him as an ExtremeDoormat, FlatCharacter, and/or even the series' CreatorsPet at worst due to his [[TheStoic relatively stoic]] [[InscrutableOriental personality]] and him representing the author's homeland which automatically makes him the character most vulnerable to MarySue accusations.
** There are even fans who take offense to a ''[[VocalMinority Visible Minority]]'' of the Japanese fandom turning him into a PossessionSue and cite this as a reason to not like him, forgetting that not only is that an absurd reason to hate the character himself (is it the ''character'' Japan's fault that his fandom likes warping his canon personality?) but that the Western fandom, or rather, American and Canadian fans do the ''[[HypocriticalFandom exact same thing]]'' to America and Canada.

* AwesomeEgo: Prussia actually has an ImageSong called "My Song That is Written By Me, For Me" that is as much of an ego trip as it sounds. He's one of the biggest {{Ensemble Darkhorse}}s in the fandom.

** The character single of Belarus and Ukraine, Carrots and Sticks. Just the beginning of it sounds awesome and sounds like a certain [[Music/{{TATU}} Russian band.]] Now that the [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iraeJc0nFLM song]] has come out, it has become very popular.

* {{Canon S|ue}}tu: Lithuania is the main [[TheWoobie woobie]] of the cast, constantly pushed around and abused by Russia, Poland and Belarus, yet still remains [[NiceGuy exceptionally kind and patient]], and is a FriendToAllLivingThings (such as Tony the alien). When he was a powerful country, he is not depicted as cruel like other empire nations; rather, his imperial past is only used to show he is not an ExtremeDoormat and was once awesome - and he's portrayed as a defensive hero rather than offender to Prussia. He also falls into CreatorsPet, as he has also made appearances that were arguably unnecessary (''America's Cleaning of the Storage'', ''About the fact that Russia's history is too scary'' aka Bloody Sunday). Though he's still a likable character, if anybody's a Stu, it's him.

** As a whole, the Nordics is one of the more popular groups. Character wise, [[BoisterousBruiser Denmark]] was the most popular until the 2010 Bloodbath where [[SugarAndIcePersonality Iceland]] became the most popular within those few days [[ShipTease due to]] [[ADayInTheLimeLight obvious reasons.]]

** Romania was depicted as AffablyEvil (most fans draw him with a SlasherSmile or a PsychoticSmirk on his face), CuteAndPsycho, or ''maybe'' {{Yandere}} for [[InterplayOfSexAndViolence Hun]][[FoeYay gary]]. His [[HoYay relationship]] with Bulgaria is also a popular fanfiction topic. Nowadays, he's usually shown as a [[TheTrickster trickster]] [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampire]].

** {{Jerk|Sue}} SympatheticSue: China is sometimes portrayed as this in Russia/China fanwork. To these fanworkers: it's good that you don't want {{Wimpification}} to take place, but making China a bitter {{Jerkass}} who whines all the time about being abandoned by everyone but Russia is NOT a viable solution. Double if you then make him hate on Korea, ''the only of his siblings who acknowledges him as their brother''!

Or claimed that him not being depicted as a monster or his ImperialJapan atrocities not being portrayed in graphic detail in a series focused on the light-hearted side of history meant that Himaruya was "trivializing" history. It was mainly limited to a VocalMinority, but they kept on finding the stupidest reasons to bash him; there was even a post on the Hetalia comm that bashed Japan as a "shojo harem manga heroine" to promote ''Turkey/Poland''. Fortunately, like with Korea, the hate has [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap quieted down over time]], probably because Japan having a minor or supporting role at best in the comics means that the VocalMinority can't call him a SpotlightStealingSquad by any stretch of the imagination.

** SympatheticSue: When the fans go to ''extremes'' though, Canada ends up as this and not as a genuine Woobie. Double points if they change [[RonTheDeathEater America into an evil]] JerkJock. This phenomenon has reached the point where it's ''costing him character popularity'' in some annoyed fandom circles.

*** SympatheticSue: When the fanworkers forget that he's got more in his personality than woobieness, Lithuania ends up as this instead.

** Little Romano was a inferiority-complex stricken kid [[ParentalAbandonment whose grandfather abandoned]] [[ParentalFavoritism him in favor of his younger brother]], who was deathly worried that Spain and France only wanted him for his grandfather's inheritance and that he had nothing to offer, [[TheUnFavorite and is often disliked in favor of his much-loved younger brother]]. On the other hand, it has also led to some of his fangirls missing the point and [[RonTheDeathEater ferociously bashing North Italy because of this]] while painting Romano [[PuritySue as a flawless angel]], when in canon North Italy cares for his brother and tries to help him but gets shot down more than once. Considering Romano's HairTriggerTemper and PerpetualFrowner traits, he's more of a JerkassWoobie: very sympathetic, yeah, but NotSoAboveItAll.

*** Apparently being able to disarm and overpower two very skilled opponents (who are wielding a katana and a gun) with nothing but a WOK isn't at all impressive... just because of the aforementioned feminine appearance and voice.

** Turkey might not have the most agreeable of personalities or the best of relations with Greece or Hungary, but some fanworks turn him into a complete asshole who will {{sm|ugSnake}}irkingly {{manipulat|iveBastard}}e, [[DomesticAbuser abuse]], and {{rape|AsDrama}} others solely to "put them in their place", whether because these fanwriters love TheMasochismTango of Turkey/Greece or Turkey/Hungary or are enamored of the idea of Turkey as a BastardBoyfriend with a WhiteMaskOfDoom.

* RelationshipSue: Sadly, even from before they were given character sketches, Portugal was (''and still is'') used as this by fans who flanderized the rich story behind the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Portuguese_Alliance Anglo-Portuguese Alliance]] into "marriage marriage marriage England England England yay they're married". Not all [=PortEng=] fans do this, but the basis is there and it's not helped [[ShipToShipCombat by the USUK bashing]]. Portugal's character notes about other charas refer mostly to Spain and South Italy, with England not even being mentioned. So, all speculations about the nature of his... her... er, ''their'' relationship with England are pure fanon.
** Seychelles has been falsely accused of being this ''many'' times by disgruntled fans, using her ''Gakuen Hetalia'' role as "proof".
** Lord, what some fangirls do to Taiwan in their Taiwan/any-Asian-male-but-almost-always-Japan fanwork. Japanese and Chinese/Taiwanese fen are especially to blame for this, apparently inspired on how her land was [[ImperialJapan "the Pearl of the Japanese Empire"]] from 1895 to 1945.
** Japan has been accused of this too by fans who apparently believe that "([[NotSoAboveItAll mostly]]) emotionally reserved character who gets focused on sometimes and has a LoveTriangle of sorts going on with two (relatively minor) characters" = "perfect GaryStu harem lead who has half of the cast falling all over him". Also comes mixed with DieForOurShip from rabid Turkey/Greece shippers who bash him for getting in the way of their "far hotter and more historically important" pairing.

* BrokenBase: ''Oh'' boy, where to start? Funimation's release of the English dub has taken the previously more-or-less united fanbase (outside of {{Shipping}}) and ''shattered'' it, probably beyond repair. Within hours of Funi showing some rather controversial scenes at a convention, massive {{flame war}}s erupted over the [[RatedMForMoney script changes]] and both fans and the haters of the series have gone neck to neck in attacking each other, if fans at each others' throats were not enough. Fans of the dub call it a perfectly-localized version with freshly-researched new lines, while those who hate it call it a cheap, {{bowdleri|se}}zed ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' FollowTheLeader that goes completely against Himaruya's own views and enters DudeNotFunny territory. The flames have yet to die down.

** Belarus became this when [[PsychopathicManchild Russia]] threatened to send her to Siberia because Lithuania expressed reservations about accompanying him to a meeting. Can you imagine your own brother [[TheUnfavourite caring so little about you]] that he uses sending you to the horror that was the [[TheGulag gulags]] as [[IHaveYourWife an incentive]] to make someone else do what he wants? If this happens on a regular basis, her bitterness comes as no surprise. Even if it's Belarus, that's just [[DudeNotFunny not right]].

* BaseBreaker: England has more haters than you'd expect, especially given the fact that he is almost bizarrely popular in both fanfic and fanart. Some fans hate him ''because'' he is so popular, finding that his popularity leaves other countries behind. Some even find him to be the CreatorsPet. On the other hand, it almost seems logical that the fandom is so divided over him--not only is he very much {{Tsundere}} (which is often taken UpToEleven by fans), he is also a country with a very long history that seems morally questionable to many, so not many are pleased with him being portrayed as TheWoobie.
** ALL countries when it boils down to it, and certainly those whoever had an Empire, will have a morally questionable history in somebody's mind -- England just has the best known example of such an Empire.
** On top of that, there's strong division over whether England should be the {{seme}} or {{uke}}. As custom for slash fics and art, [[{{Wimpification}} many fans will exaggerate]] England's more submissive and feminine traits. But then you have fans giving him the badass seme treatment, often to RonTheDeathEater levels, because he was an empire and therefore must always top.

* SecondLove: Arguably for [[{{Fanon}} some fans]], what [[{{Tsundere}} Norway]] is to [[LoveMartyr Sweden]] [[NapoleonicWars after the Napoleonic Wars,]] [[ArrangedMarriage leading up to their third personal union.]] Although the union is sometimes interpreted as either AMatchMadeInStockholm (technically Moss, Norway) or NoAccountingForTaste. However, Sweden is still consistently shown with Finland more often than anyone else in the modern day strips, making this one pure {{fanon}} speculation.
