Even if Wan and/or Raava were able to get a message to Korra after she left the Bhanti tribe's island, there's nothing to indicate either of them knew that Vaatu would be able to escape his prison with both spirit portals open during Harmonic Convergence. Remember, this is the first time they tried just imprisoning Vaatu; Wan closed the portals because for all he knew, someone could've figured out a way to release the spirit without Harmonic Convergence being in effect.

'''As a Result:''' The President refuses aid to Korra yet again, which results in Korra ([[spoiler: being unable to stop Unalaq from merging with Vaatu, and Team Avatar only barely manage to prevent Vaatu and Unalaq from defeating Rava, ending the Avatar cycle, and plunging the world into milennia of darkness.]])
* Probably the biggest goof up in the entire season, if not the entire series. In "The Guide", Korra now knows about the Harmonic Convergence and now resolves to close the Southern spirit portal to prevent Vaatu's escape. She has to do it from the spirit world as it will no doubt be heavily guarded from the human world's side. \\
'''You'd Expect:''' For her to realise that she simply has to do '''''absolutely nothing''''' and simply wait out Harmonic Convergence. Vaatu needs ''both'' portals open and Korra is the only person capable of opening and closing the spirit portals. If she is ignorant of this fact or thinks that just one portal is enough to break Vaatu's prison, Raava or Wan should start spilling the beans. Problem solved.\\
'''Instead:''' Due to a combination of BecauseDestinySaysSo, IdiotBall and PoorCommunicationKills, Raava and Wan clam up about this very important fact while Korra and Jinora enter the Spirit World due to Tenzin not being able to enter himself.\\
'''As a Result:''' Jinora gets captured by a vengeful and ignorant Wang Shi Tong and is used as a hostage. As a spirit, Korra is without her bending and is at the mercy of Unalaq. With Jinora as a hostage, Korra was forced to open the Northern spirit portal. This results in the events of the rest of the season, if not the series. Jinora's spirit gets lost in the Spirit World which cost Team Avatar the aid of Tenzin, Kya and Bumi, whose presence could have at least allowed Korra to re-imprison Vaatu. This allows the Dark Avatar to be formed while causing the destruction of the connection to the previous avatars.\\
'''Not to mention:''' In Book Three, it's revealed that while Harmonic Convergence restored the Air Nation and prevented any future possible inbreeding among Aang's descendants, it also gave [[BombThrowingAnarchists Zaheer]] the power of airbending as well, resulting in the return of the Red Lotus and the rise of the Earth Empire.

'''The Result''': At first Mako understandably tells Korra that such a confession is inappropriate because his relationship with Asami is serious. Then Korra angers both brothers when she kisses Mako after going on a date with Bolin, and nearly sabotages their teamwork in a Pro-Bending tournament. To top it all off, Asami is seriously hurt when she finds out about the kiss, and she finds out while seeking refuge on Air Temple Island. Pema gets a HeelRealization when she sees Asami's heartbreak, since Asami didn't deserve a boyfriend tempted by the Avatar.

'''Even Worse:''' Tenzin reveals his perspective on what happened the next episode: he and Lin had drifted apart due to going different directions in life, and Pema just swooped in at the right time. Mako and Asami were doing fine until this moment

** Wonyong Keum, the owner of the land surrounding the new Spirit Portal, plans to turn it into an amusement park and offer tours of the Spirit World. In addition to this scheme being opposed by Korra, Asami and the Air Nomads, Keum is implicitly threatened by one of the spirits, who is very clear about not giving a damn for human property laws.\\

'''Bonus Idiocy:''' Despite him ultimately ceding the land around the spirit portal to the Air Nation, ''[[TabletopGame/AvatarLegendsTheRoleplayingGame Avatar Legends]]'' indicates that Keum's company is still going strong compared to the other major corporations in Republic City. So there was really no excuse for his actions besides simple {{Greed}}.

They'd already made the long journey from Wolf Cove (the South's capital) to the portal by the time Korra came to understand her father's viewpoint.

'''You'd Expect:''' Korra, now understanding what everyone means, would turn around to quickly apologize to her parents while she was still in the Southern Water Tribe's side of the spirit portal.\\
'''Or Even:''' Asami to have said all of the above ''before'' suggesting to Korra that they leave the Southern Water Tribe palace.\\

'''Instead:''' She immediately gets aggressive with Bolin, angrily questioning his loyalty and threatening to send him to a re-education camp, prompting which she and Baatar Jr make clear are ''not'' used to teach people new trade skills.\\
'''Result:'''
Bolin finally sees Kuvira's true colors, and teams up with Varrick - another member of Kuvira's inner circle who's now having second thoughts - to [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere defect]].escape the Earth Empire. He later prevents Varrick from [[HeroicSacrifice sacrificing himself to keep Kuvira from weaponizing spirit vines through him]], and the two of them help each other to get back to Republic City, where Varrick's technical know-how proves instrumental in stopping Kuvira during the final battle.

After a bit of discussion about this example elsewhere, I've decided to remove it. There were arguably other factors playing into the group's decision to travel to the prison alone; Zuko needed to reach Tonraq, Desna and Eska fast, Desna and Eska would have to approve the other two bringing in guards of sorts, and there was presumably still a need to keep the prison secret while it was occupied.

* Zuko finds out that Zaheer has become an airbender as a result of Harmonic Convergence, and used his newfound gift to escape from jail and rescue his friends Ghazan and Ming-Hua, both of whom are very skilled benders. Zuko guesses rightly that the trio will go to the North Pole to try and rescue P'li, the last member of their old group and Zaheer's girlfriend. To stop them, he assembles a team consisting of himself, Tonraq, Desna and Eska, to stand guard over P'li's prison.\\
'''You'd Expect:''' That any of the people involved would bring along support of some kind. After all, Desna and Eska are joint chiefs of the Northern Water Tribe, Tonraq's chief of the Southern Water Tribe, Zuko's the father of the current Fire Lord, and both Tonraq and Zuko have connections to the White Lotus.\\
'''Or Even:''' Just kill P'li. If the Red Lotus are as bad as they seem, it might not be nice, but removing a powerful Combustion Bender from their potential ranks would be smart.\\
'''Instead:''' The four of them go it alone, with only two [[{{Mook}} White Lotus guards]] and Zuko's pet dragon backing them up.\\
'''As a Result:''' Zaheer, Ghazan and Ming-Hua are subsequently able to spring P'li with little effort.

As shown by the last scene of the battle, they were at least one floor above ground level. It's never confirmed whether or not the building's construction would provide enough earth for Korra to create a blockade there.

* Korra and Mako freed Tenzin and his family. Korra tells them to run and she create a diversion to draw Amon away.\\
'''You'd Expect:''' [[spoiler:Knowing that he is a dangerous psychic bloodbender,]] Korra raise many chunks of earth to block Amon's path, making it impossible for him to follow.\\
'''Instead:''' Korra set the floor on fire which dissipate a few seconds later. Amon has no trouble passing and finds Korra easily.

Just because Pema's married to Tenzin doesn't mean his skills will necessarily transfer over to her. By that logic, Korra and Mako should know all about running a massive corporation solely through dating Asami.

'''You'd Expect''': Pema would consider that actions have consequences, and be careful about how she phrases her advice. After all, when she confessed her love to Tenzin, Lin was really hurt by it and trashed Air Temple Island after the breakup. The experience scarred Lin, to the point where mentioning her failed relationship sets off her BerserkButton. Further, as the wife of the leader of all Air Nomads in the world, whose word carries significant weight, she would have had lessons or experience with public speaking so as to carefully consider her word choice.\\

** Season four starts with Kuvira and Suyin at odds. Kuvira left Zaofu when Suyin refused to become an Earth queen or leader, fearing that the power would make her a tyrant as bad as the previous Earth Queen Hou-Ting. (She may have been right given her past as a SpoiledBrat and {{Delinquent}}.) Instead, her adopted daughter is launching campaigns to protect Earth Kingdom civilians and recruit them as part of her growing empire.\\

* Korra returns to Republic City with a plea to the President that his army is desperately needed to aid in preventing Unalaq from merging with, and freeing Vaatu onto the world, plunging it into millenia of darkness.\\
'''You'd Expect:''' The President to realize that he's currently being asked to fight against human enemies, and not the unknown horrors of an immensely powerful dark spirit. A dark spirit who is capable of (and already had in the past) defeating the avatar spirit, and therefore is, at the ''very'' least, far more threatening to human forces and habitations than whatever Unalaq alone is.\\
'''Instead:''' The President apparently throws logic out the window and decides it's a much better plan to keep his entire army in Republic City to try and fend off Vaatu and Unalaq after they've merged into the dark Avatar, rather than just stopping Unalaq from freeing and merging with Vaatu in the first place.\\

'''The Result''': Both women suffer from the emotional fallout of this decision, as the end of season 4 and ''Ruins of the Empire'' detail. The Beifong adults and children alike are traumatized after seeing their home corrupted and being locked in a dangling wooden cage for months on end, with Opal being the only one to avoid imprisonment.
