Frederic's decidion is presented as not right but understandable; Varian's grief over his father is presented as sympathetic as well. Frederic eventually goes Its All My Fault about the black rocks; Rapunzel forgives him. Later, she forgives Varian, too, after he owns up to his mistakes and redeems himself. This, and Frederic is no protagonist. While they do make a lot of fuss about Cassandra’s possible redemption and forgive a lot of her transgressions, the second bullet overlooks the fact that she is forgiven after she pulls a Heel Face Turn, while Varian is imprisoned after he is defeated but still determined to cause trouble, and he takes over the kingdom later on.
