''Spinnerette'' is largely an AffectionateParody of {{Superhero}} stories (most prominently Franchise/SpiderMan, of course), all about Heather's forays into the world of superheroism and the many problems that can come with it. Humor is largely derived from Heather jumping headfirst into superheroics without any forethought, and the problems that causes. But it's an upbeat comic ([[CerebusSyndrome for the most part]]) and Heather's many troubles never get her down.

** Played with in Spinnerette's... well, spinnerets. Unlike Franchise/SpiderMan, Spinnerette shoots webbing not from her wrists, but from [[InsistentTerminology the base of her spine]] -- which still has no direct correlation with any part of a real spider's anatomy. Of course, Sahira [[LampshadeHanging points out]] that spiders have completely different physiologies to humans, and initially berates Heather for assuming that she was capable of spinning webs at all:

* FreakLabAccident: How Heather gets her powers (naturally). [[DoubleSubversion Doubly subverted]], as the reader is initially led to think that, just like Franchise/SpiderMan, Heather would get her powers from a mutant spider-bite -- and then her boss points out to interviewing reporter how absurd that would be. Turns out that she only developed her powers after falling into the "Genetic Modifier" vat used to mutate those spiders in the first place.

** Heather's costume, origin story, and superheroic abilities are all [[AffectionateParody affectionate parodies]] of Franchise/SpiderMan. Heather also makes joking references to a SpiderSense, but she doesn't appear to actually have one and is only saying so to needle Sahira.

* DeliberateValuesDissonance: The Silver Age Spinnerette comic is depicted as if it were written in TheSeventies. The general tone is highly patriotic, hippies are AcceptableTargets, and Sahira has light skin, among other things.

* SurprisinglyGoodForeignLanguage: When Creator/BenjaminFranklin travels back in time UsefulNotes/NaziGermany, Hitler's German looks rather decent (the author either asked a German speaker to translate it or he is one himself).

* HitlersTimeTravelExemptionAct: Played with at the start of Issue 8, when a time traveler burst into Hitler's office in an attempt to kill him, only to be stopped by a naked time-traveling Creator/BenjaminFranklin. Its a long story, okay?

* HypocriticalHumor: Heather can't ''stand'' anime art, and has problems with ''Comicbook/{{Empowered}}'' by AdamWarren because of this. Spinnerette has been compared both artistically and thematically to ''Empowered''...

* OurVampiresAreDifferent: [[http://www.spinnyverse.com/comic/10-01-2010 He would have been]], if the comic had been published a few years earlier. Now it's averted, since we have the vampires from the ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'' series for him to resemble[[note]]He has a horde of fangirls, too[[/note]].

** They're [[ConversationalTroping described as being]] somewhere in between ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'' and ''Film/TeenWolf'' werewolves, "with some ''Film/GingerSnaps'' thrown in."

** "You're not going anywhere, [[Literature/{{Twilight}} you sparkly bastard]]."

* GagBoobs: Greta Gravity's massive prow has been the butt of a few jokes. Tiger also makes a few remarks about bovine growth hormone in reference to Evil Spinerette's bust. And then there's the crowning achievement of gag-boobage, Super-MILF, and her "Venusian Bosom".

* MostCommonSuperpower: Seems to be an actual law of the 'verse that superpowers come packaged with, er, [[BreastExpansion physical enhancements]]. Played both for {{Fanservice}} and [[GagBoobs comedy]].

* NoPeripheralVision: Spinny [[http://www.spinnyverse.com/comic/07-13-2012 hides from Greta]] directly beneath the windowsill she's looking out from. Justified, as [[GagBoobs looking down is not Greta's strong suit.]]

* PaperThinDisguise: In Issue #12, Dr. Universe and Greta disguise as package couriers (with the latter hiding her GagBoobs in a pair of boxes). Heather and Marilyn identify them both immediately.

* PerkyFemaleMinion: Greta Gravity. Emphasis on [[GagBoobs "perky."]]

** At the least, the author is fond of multi-armed people/extra independently-minded body parts in general (see the Cerberus girl and Katt O'Nine Tails), as well as the MostCommonSuperpower (up to GagBoobs levels, with a slice of BBW on the side).

* BareYourMidriff:
** Heather ''wants'' to do this to show off her girl abs, but [[http://www.spinnyverse.com/comic/05-12-2010 is shot down by Sahira]].
** Practically all of Sahira's outfits do.

* ACupAngst: Seems to be part of the reason for Mecha Maid's immediate dislike of Super MILF, particularly given [[BuxomIsBetter her girlfriend's vocal fascination with the latter's endowment]].

* AluminumChristmasTrees: During the second ''White Heron'' comic, when Ozawa sings "[[Music/TheBeeGees Stayin' Alive]]" while using CPR, it may not just be a FunnyBackgroundEvent; the song [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stayin%27_Alive#Uses_in_medical_training has been used to train actual medical professionals]], teaching them to perform the right number of chest compressions per minute, as the song's BPM maps nicely to the required chest compression rate. Furthermore, as [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stayin%27_Alive#Uses_in_medical_training another study revealed that quality of CPR increases while thinking about "Stayin' Alive"]], Ozawa singing this may actually be downright helpful.

* JerkassHasAPoint: Dr. Universe is a hard-line Objectivist who refuses to do anything unless it helps him personally or advances his agenda, and has no moral compunction about committing crimes or allying with [[ThoseWackyNazis questionable]] [[CorruptHick people]] to do so. However, [[spoiler:during the incident when Spinnerette gets hit by a lethal dose of C-K Radiation, he makes her realize that even the most selfless heroes have a desire for self-preservation, and sometimes, ''it's okay'' to act selfishly.]]

In 2022, Spinnerette made a surprise cameo guest-appearance on one of the variant covers of [[Franchise/MarvelUniverse Marvel]]'s ''Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man'' #4.

* BustChart: One of the [[http://spinnerette.wikia.com/wiki/File:Spinnerette_Bust-Chart.jpg donation wallpapers]] is a chart of all the superpowered female characters in their usual attire lined up in order of breast size. Unsurprisingly, Super MILF and Greta Gravity take the top spots.

* CleavageWindow:
** [[http://www.spinnyverse.com/comic/12-03-2010 Heather wants one]], but Sahira lampshades it and lists the drawbacks of having one. Why would any sane ([[NighInvulnerability non-invulnerable]]) woman cut a hole in bulletproof fabric in such a way to leave her heart exposed? It's justified in the case of Super MILF, whose breasts generate heat and therefore require ventilation.

* BaitAndSwitchComment: Buzz takes down Colonel Glass with a shotgun, then tells Spinnerette to get some gasoline so they can burn him to death before he regenerates. When she objects that they don't need to, he starts going into a speech about of heroes not killing isn't always a bright idea, when Spinnerette interrupts to say that what she meant was that they didn't need gasoline, because she had a thermite charge on her. Colonel Glass is promptly incinerated.

* AndNowForSomethingCompletelyDifferent: Issue 19 seems to transfer the entire cast into a harem anime HighSchoolAU, with the addition of one new character...

** Mecha Maid is obviously a tribute to several aspects of anime culture, including {{Meido}}, PoweredArmor, and YouGottaHaveBlueHair. At one point, she specifically mentions ''Manga/{{Mahoromatic}}'' as the reason she went with a "maid" theme. [[spoiler:She's also a HandicappedBadass scientist who uses her PoweredArmor to gain increased mobility, much like the old TV superhero M.A.N.T.I.S., and the series itself is not mentioned by name, but it's explicitly mentioned as an InUniverse inspiration.]]

* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Though annoyed by his repeat of it, Heather admits that [[PunnyName Van-Hailing's]] rendition of 'The Itsy-Bitsy Spider' was [[http://www.spinnyverse.com/comic/09-17-2012 pretty clever]] the first time around.

* AdultFear: After Tiger's wife had made him promise not to be a superhero [[spoiler:a gunman attacked the school his daughters attended -- and his wife wasn't able to contact them. While they turned out to be safe, for one gut-wrenching moment Tiger faced a parent's worst nightmare.]]
