* With the existence of Hecatia, designed after a Greek god rather than anything from Japan, as well as the mention of the god Apollo, it shows that the universe Touhou takes place in has figures from cultures outside of those within the area around Japan, so it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for other parts of the world to have done something similar to when the Great Hakurei Barrier was made, sealing off most aspects of religion, magic, and all else forgotten by the world in the way Gensokyo's border works. It also helps that it's already been shown that there's ways through the barriers, so Hecatia doesn't necessarily have to have been restricted to Gensokyo with her Earth body (plus her whole very outside world fashion sense seems like she spends at least some time within the outside world itself).

In Touhou 4, 6 and 7, one boss is sealed away at or after the end of the game and a boss resembling her but weaker appears early in the game. Kurumi resembles Gengetsu, Rumia resembles Flandre, and Letty resembles Yuyuko. And in the games, the weaker and stronger bosses never meet. These bosses could keep their main spirit sealed away and send out their body to try and stop the heroes (Kurumi), draw their attention (Rumia), or distract them (Letty).

And as a result of this I also belive that every shrine maiden also suffer from a shortened life span meaning they will most likley have to continue the bloodline as early as possible in order to ensure that the barrier doesn't run out of fuel. During the actual game Meiling is never actually caught sleeping. She proactively attacks you before you even get to the mansion and attacks you again at what is probably the front gate. Assuming Remilia did the vampire thing of being active mainly at night, Meiling's job would be to keep out intruders during the day when her mistress was most vulnerable. She would then sleep at night. After Reimu beat Remilia, Remilia starts taking an interest in things outside the mansion and becomes more active during the day. [[spoiler: In both of Reimu's endings, Remilia goes to bug her at the shrine during daytime.]] With her mistress spending more time awake during the day, Meiling would have to stand guard at night as well as through the day; to guard her mistress while she slept and to guard the mansion when Remilia and sometimes Sakuya were absent. Meiling probably had to switch to that sleep system where you nap throughout the day to make up for not being able to get eight straight hours.
* Going along with this, her story mode in Unthinkable Natural Law [[spoiler: where she sleeps through her entire scenario and dreams about fighting a giant catfish]] might be her crashing from not getting enough sleep and all the REM sleep she missed giving her some really messed up dreams.

Even if the curve can be explained away by ZUN being unable to draw a straight line, why is it's blade sharpened the wrong way? It would also explain why she can boomerang it for no particular reason. If it's her real body, of course she can do odd things like that. Maybe her power involves telekinesis, sure, we can infer that from the floor tiles, but still. It may also explain how she blocks attacks with it. She's much more used to controlling her true body than her human disguise, right?
