[[WMG: The Shiverburn figures and the goal pole ghost from ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand'' have sympathetic backstories and they used to be actual humans before they died]]
They're ghostly humanoid figures, so of course they may be souls of dead humans. Here's how thier human forms might've died:
* The Shiverburn Figures: A group of three young men were mucking around in the Shiverburn Galaxy peaks, watching the sights and sounds of the galaxy. One day, they spyed on the boss of this game and mocked it behind its back, but they didn't realise that [[spoiler: the boss was behind them and ran them over like a pancake, thus killing them and turning them into the Shiverburn figures we dreaded]].

* (This is where the midquel part comes in.) Now that everyone is back together again, Mario and co. return to the Mushroom World for the ''third'' Star Festival, which is the one with the Purple Coins that gave you the original game's 121st star, thereby explaining how Mario could have Luma with him again despite the fact that he'd "just" sacrificed himself to destroy Bowser's black hole - because there was a whole other game since then that we hadn't seen.

[[WMG: ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' is an alternate universe from ''Super Mario Galaxy'']]
The gaming styles are are different, different power-ups, and Yoshi is in the worlds. The fact that Mario does not recognize Rosalina in the slightest by the end of ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' is the kicker, though.
* Not to mention that the Toad Brigade are actually useful (in one level, but the point stands).
* The Toad Brigade was only useful when the Captain was kidnapped. They need a change in leadership.
* This was actually confirmed by WordOfGod before release.

[[WMG: ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' is [[spoiler:the new galaxy.]]]]
[[spoiler:Rosalina mentions at the end of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' that, after the effective [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt destruction of the universe]], the stardust had re-formed to restore the galactic cycle, but she points out that "the cycle never repeats itself in quite the same way," ending with a rather ominous "So you'll see..."]] Given that ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'' will be half MissionPackSequel and half UpdatedRerelease, featuring some new galaxies as well as returning ones with new objectives, it's possible that these galaxies are simply the result of [[spoiler:the life cycle continuing in a somewhat different way, and the [[PunctuatedForEmphasis NHOOOOO GhAALACKSEEEE]] Mario's so excited to welcome will be the setting of the sequel.]]

* All but confirmed by Miyamoto himself, who had [[http://gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2010/03/26/miyamoto-on-mario-galaxy-2-expanding-games-and-more.aspx said]] that "[Super Mario Galaxy 2] has been developed and designed so that those who have conquered the prequel, Super Mario Galaxy 1, can feel as if it’s a continuation from the ending of that first game."

A much simpler alternative to all those "alternate universe" theories posted above...''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' takes place after the main ending of the first game, but the near-death and rebirth of the universe led to Mario and co. developing amnesia, thereby explaining why he doesn't remember Luma and has to be re-taught the controls and mechanics of the game. Here's how it goes:
* The Lumas recreate the universe, sending everyone back to the day of the Star Festival at the start of the game. (Which becomes the festival seen at the start of the second game.) Rosalina departs in the observatory, unknowingly leaving the white Luma behind in the rusted starshroom.

[[WMG: The Bulb Berry warps time.]]
Think about it. Revealing platforms that don't physically exist? Shining light on paintings that otherwise appear to have rotted away? The Bulb Berry is warping objects' past forms to the present!

For example, it lets you see inside the wrappers of candy bars in the [[LevelAte Sweet Mystery Galaxy]]. This can be explained as looking as the chocolate at a time before it had been packaged. And the other candy platforms that reveal themselves when you use the Bulb Berry had simply been eaten, or otherwise destroyed, before Mario got to the galaxy.

This also explains the "light" motif; [[FridgeBrilliance because things become dusty when they get old]].

To expand on the above theory, the two games are part of a ''Zelda''-esque Split Timeline. The GainaxEnding of Timeline A (''Galaxy'') sent Mario back in time to just before the Star Festival, which is where the continuity branched off into Timeline B (''Galaxy 2''). However, doing so [[RetGone removed Mario from Timeline A]][[hottip:*:A literal CosmicRetcon?]], thus preventing him from defeating Bowser-- to prevent a TemporalParadox, someone was sent to do it for him: Luigi. He was also sent back in time, but instead to a point early on in Timeline A, taking Mario's place (while keeping the previous Luigi where he was, which accounts for the two of them). While Luigi was (re-)collecting the Timeline A Stars, Mario went on his merry way, collecting all of the Timeline B Stars (and encountering Luigi-B and Toad Brigade-B, among others). The first game's Grand Finale Galaxy is the result of the timeline being fused back together.

At the end of the first ''Mario Galaxy'', Rosalina and her Lumas managed to save the universe, basically by creating a Big Crunch and rebuilding the entire thing from scratch. Mario and most of the characters he encountered in his quest are "reanimated" in a freshly-created Mushroom Kingdom, itself part of a grand, unified Galaxy. However, ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'' can't be a direct sequel to this, since the Star Festival happens once in a hundred years, and Mario is still kicking around, not a day older. So, the game is set in an ''alternate universe'' concurrent with the events of the first game, to be "merged" into a single timeline following the events of the ''second'' game. In other words, yes, ''Super Mario freakin' Bros'' now has [[TheLegendOfZelda a split timeline theory.]]

Rosalina is really, really, really old, but kept looking youthful by her vast reserves of...Spiral Energy; she only appears to lack hot-bloodedness she's overpowered and slightly lazy (compare: [[OrcusOnHisThrone Lordgenome On His Throne]] and she'd rather let Mario do the work. The Lumas are living beings that regularly explode into galaxies, which is exactly what the Anti-Spiral stated would occur during the Spiral Nemesis, and Mario's Luma gives him the ability to attack by spinning. Finally, the top of Rosalina's Observatory [[ThisIsADrill spins like a drill when it flies]], and [[BadassBoast THEIRS IS THE DRILL]] [[BeyondTheImpossible THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!!]]

That's why Rosalina looks so young but is still able to survive the hundred year gap between visits to the Mushroom World. In the first game she says she always looks forward to passing by it, which indicates that she's survived enough time to pass it multiple times, making her multiple centuries old. And if Boos have taught us anything it shows that death isn't a permanent departure from the living. And it would explain her ability to float. Perhaps a diet consisting entirely of Star Bits can't sustain human life forever...

*Either that or she's outright immortal. That would also explain how she still looks like a young woman despite living through hundred year gaps like that.
