*** Technically, all biological evolution is just genetic mutations (i.e. a change in the genome). It's a matter of whether the change is beneficial or not.

* His girl friend did just dump him this brought on a nightmare about how his mission could go. Think about it the film seems to be completely based around how sucky life could get for Bower and then he meets a beautiful girl and he saves her numerous times then they find out life is not all that bad and they get to live on a foreign planet for the rest of their life.

* Gallo thought that it was as a result of Pandorum, and subsequently told everyone he released. He may even have killed his fellow crewmates specifically because he genuinelly thought they were crazy for denying that Earth was gone. There is, after all, little that could cause Earth to literally vanish from a map, and Gallo seems to be the only witness to that. Even if some horrible catastrophe did befall Earth, it could still be pandorum that let Gallo believe Earth was completely gone, which made him discount the possibility that the human race might have survived whatever it was and thus cemented his fall into nihilistic madness.

** Actually, I believe that's exactly what happened. According to Leland's rant Gallo had been playing games with the colonists for centuries.

[[WMG: Gallo convinced the passengers to become cannibals]]
Gallo tried this at the end of the film with Bower. He would wake up the passengers and tell them what happened to Earth so they can suffer from Pandorum in order to preach his views on life to them. We've seen a guy with Pandorum becoming convinced that a ship was cursed, it would be pretty easy to convince someone with Pandorum that humanity's ways of thinking were the cause of Earth's overpopulation and that living in a natural animalistic/primitive state was the way to go. That's what Leland meant by when he said "he cast out those who behave" referring to the passengers with Pandorum.

*** Or the message was a deliberate hoax sent from Earth, because there'd been some kind of political upheaval back home, and the ones who'd seized power didn't want anyone from Tanis to ever try to return and overthrow their new empire. A similar message was disseminated to Earth's population at the same time, to say that the ''Elysium'' had been destroyed so no one living under the new regime would ever try to contact the colonists.

Elysium launched in 2174, and Shepard was born in 2154 in both universes. Elysium's Shepard had no team or resources to draw on, so it was all he could do to survive as long as he did.

[[WMG: History Of The Ship]]
Gallo thought primitive was better, that an advanced race like humanity was the cause of Earth's overpopulation, leak of natural resources, and its demises. He believed that this would also happen again with Tanis if he didn't do something about it. He believed if life ate life, that if it was in its primitive/natural/raw state there would be no overpopulation and leak of natural resources, everything would be balanced and perfect. Gallo plays "a nasty little game" with himself to pass the time, it shows that he enjoys driving people mad. There is a good chance that Gallo has played this kind of game with the passengers he released so they can get Pandorum like himself which he sees as "enlightment". This would also explain why the crew are also seen with lightning over their heads on the drawings like Gallo, to represent Pandorum, the "evil that grew". When Leland said that "he cast out those who ''behaved''" he meant that he would let those who gave into Pandorum and his beliefs go out into the ship to live in a raw and natural state of survival of the fittest. This ideal was passed dawn to the descendants of crew and would explain why they feed on their own. When Leland mentioned that ''a whole new world of evil grew'' that's when the de-evolution kicked in and deformities were caused due sleeping under a nuclear reactor for generations. And those who didn't gave into Pandorum were killed and eaten by Gallo as shown in of drawing of him. That's why he tried to convince Bower into giving into Pandorum, so that he could be a part of the new world that he created.

Gallo plays "a nasty little game" with himself to pass the time, it shows that he enjoys driving people mad. There is a good chance that Gallo has played this kind of game with the passengers he released so they can get Pandorum like himself. So when Leland said that "he cast out those who behaved" I believe ''behaved''" he meant that he would let those who gave into Pandorum, Pandorum and believed in his philosophy of how the world should be, go out into the ship and to live in a raw and natural state. state of survival of the fittest. This ideal was passed to the descendants of crew and would explain why they feed on their own. And as for those one who didn't behave were killed and eaten by Gallo. Which Gallo as show on the wall of drawing of him. That's is why he tried to tempt Bower into giving into Pandorum

Pandorum, so that he could be a part of the a new world that he created.

[[WMG: Whole Movie Is A Homage To TwelveThirteen Game]]
I can't help but feel that the story is largely constructed from the 1213 plot/story. I'm guessing that the Pandorum writers changed/rearranged elements of the story, so as to not make it a complete ripoff, but there are glaring parallels between both stories. There is also what I believe is an homage(a clue?) to the game as well in the movie. At the very end of the movie, look for a certain 4 digit number as a very prominent plot point. If any knows the 1213 story and is a little masochistic, watch the movie and watch the game on YouTube and dare to compare.

** Actually, I believe that's exactly what happened. According to Leland's rant Gallo had been playing games with the colonists for centuries.
