Through someone else's Geass power or some other AppliedPhlebotinum he's [[spoiler: brought back to life, though he doesn't want to be.]] Fearing that this will undo what he sought to achieve he escapes into that alternate world he discovered when he was young and reunites with Quillsh Wammy, where he takes on a new identity as the Great Detective L. But he's still [[BreakTheCutie very depressed]] and [[spoiler: [[DeathSeeker wants to die]].]] So, he never goes out, his hair grows long and he wears the [[LimitedWardrobe clothes of a commoner]]. [[TheAtoner He spends all his time solving cases]] and since he has [[BadDreams horrific nightmares]] from the war he tries to [[TheInsomniac avoid sleeping]], and begins [[SweetTooth eating massive amounts of sweets as a nervous habit.]] He takes on the Kira case partly out of a desire to stop him before he can create an EvilEmpire just like Britannia but also out a subconscious hope that Kira [[spoiler: [[DeathSeeker will grant his wish.]]]]

He sits in the same position nearly all the time. Sure, he moves sometimes, he's not a complete faqeer, but he also doesn't eat anything of substance – no proteins or fats – so he might have been doing the starving thing if he hadn't needed sugar and caffeine to keep his brain high-performing. He even says that sitting normally would reduce his reasoning ability by forty percent, which likely isn't the whole story, but seems too specific to be a complete lie.

Note that this is a theory for the TV Drama, and look at how many times Light knees L in the guts and tosses him around, L is even left a shaking mess on the ground and sounds like he is struggling to speak, him getting some wind back during Light's rant at him does not mean anything, as internal bleeding does not cause instant death, so it would still go in the "can't kill anyone if they are so and so seconds away from dying anyway".

Mikami was bullied at school, after all. We never knew anything about Light's childhood. Where does all this hatred he feels towards bad people come from? Where does his arrogance come from? Is he depressed? None of these questions were answered and it seems that all that hatred and arrogance could be the product of [[FreudianExcuse some traumatic event that he witnessed during his childhood]], perhaps school bullying.

All ho yay aside ..think about it Light is bored and basically takes up the death note as a drug to keep himself entertained, and L only takes cases that interest him, but if they both had an 'outlet' AKA someone of equel smarts to talk to and bounce thoughts off of, they could be better people as a whole, L could start taking on just normal murder/robbery/rape/etc. cases, not just the "interesting" ones to see if he or Light could solve it quicker, as a game for them to play, with all the cold cases and just normal everyday crimes, it would keep an almost constant flow of 'entertainment' for the two of them, Plus it would benefit the world even better than Light thought Kira would (since crime went right back up after Light/Kira died )

First of all, Misa was throwing herself all over him from the second they met, and he didn't seem to care. Later, she began wearing the most fetishistic things imaginable when they're alone; again, he doesn't give a fuck. He's never shown any interest in women beyond their usefulness to his plans (Misa and Takada for their willingness to follow him completely, the girl he took to Spaceland, etc.). He even said something to the effect that all the girls in his school want him, but he only sees it as a way to help in his plans. All this is understandable after he obtains the Death Note; all he wants then is world domination. But one would think that, being so popular, he would have had a girlfriend before he found it.

In other words, a DistaffCounterpart of himself who wouldn't [[TheStarscream try to overthrow him]]. Neither Misa nor Takada fit the bill (both of them obeyed him out of blind love rather than true understanding of his motives).

Even then, the relationship would probably be non-sexual, and Light's priority would still be [[ItsAllAboutMe himself]].

L possessed some mind-reading powers and could also predict future, he just needed to focus on something and if this something is human he read his mind (but couldn't see with his eyes), or if it is event or idea he saw near future in third person perspective. However he was smart enough to maintain cover so the problem was not to find who committed crimes, but how to tell others without being suspicious. He could tell that Light is Kira from the very beginning, but had to start investigation to draw no uncontrollable or unwanted attention to himself. However he couldn't read shinigami's minds and probably knew that, this explains his freakout when he learned that shinigamis are real. And yes, he heard all Light's internal monologues but needed irresistible evidence or Light's personal public confession to arrest him, and also it was hard for him to accept Death Note as Light's weapon. While Light was losing to L all the time L missed exact moment Light set events leading to his death in motion but all he could do by that time is to call someone from Wammy's house as his substitute.

Before taking on the Kira case, L had already believed (or knew) that there were grim reapers who had the power to remotely kill humans, using magical killer notebooks that can be given to mortals. However he didn't admit this knowledge at first, because he knew it would be dismissed as superstition, and also because even he didn't fully understand it. Nevertheless when he first heard about the Kira murders he knew that it had to be something of a supernatural nature, which is what interested him to investigate. When he read the word "Shinigami", he realized that his fears were confirmed, which caused him to panic and break his otherwise stoic demeanor.
