Based on a successful PC {{eroge}} [[VisualNovel visual novel]] released in 2008 by RICOTTA, ''Princess Lover!'' got a TwelveEpisodeAnime adaptation in the summer of 2009 by Creator/GoHands, with its own series of [[LightNovel light novels]], [[ComicBookAdaptation manga adaptations]] and a "[[SelfCensoredRelease clean]]" UpdatedRerelease for the UsefulNotes/PlayStation2. An [[{{Hentai}} H]]-{{OVA}}, released in September 2010, re-tells the story, with the focus on Sylvia van Hossen.

* BleachedUnderpants: Played straight with the TV series, subverted with the [=OVAs=].

** This is taken directly from the 2007 ''Film/{{Transformers}}'' film by Creator/MichaelBay.

* CensorSteam: Upskirt angles and nude shots have shadows covering the naughty bits in the TV anime. In the HotSpringsEpisode, the shadows are replaced with steam (obviously).
** Subverted, of course, in the [[BetterOnDVD DVD/Blu-Ray releases]], except for the [[MaleFrontalNudity guys'...um...things]] (which are still blotted out).
** Lampshaded in the picture drama as black holes.

* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler: In the anime, both Haltman and Josephine get some punishment, though completely unrelated to both their crimes, and their victims. Josephine gets shot by Haltman, purely to show how vindictive and petty he is, although she lives, and Haltman gets thrown into a river by Charlotte's BattleButler simply because said BattleButler was trying to catch a falling Charlotte but caught him instead.]]

** And if you look at Teppei and Charlotte, you can somehow get the feeling that you are looking at small versions of [[LightNovel/FateZero Kiritsugu and Irisviel]] (including the RescueRomance stuff)...

* PreclimaxClimax: In the [[{{hentai}} H-OVA]], Sylvia leaves the Arima estate to defend her kingdom, after learning they were at war with the neighboring Principality. But knowing she'd be risking her life in battle, she expresses her love for Teppei [[CoitusEnsues by letting him have his way with her]] the entire night. She leaves the following morning and entrusts Yuu to [[SleepingWithTheBoss satisfy Teppei's urges]] until she returns.

* AccidentalPervert: Teppei believes he has the power to invoke this and not get the usual barrage of {{Megaton Punch}}es and {{Armor Piercing Slap}}s. He's dead wrong, as the HotSpringsEpisode illustrates.

* {{Gainaxing}}: Sylvia (particularly while fencing), and Charlotte [[spoiler:while playing "horse" with Teppei]]. Naturally, the DVD/Blu-Ray releases reveal even more, especially in the HotSpringsEpisode.

* RapunzelHair: Charlotte, Seika when she lets her hair down, also, and even some of the minor female characters in the series have waist-length hair.

* CornerOfWoe: Invoked during the HotSpringsEpisode, due to Yuu finding it unacceptable that the other girls insisted on having her share their room instead of the maid's quarters.

* ShyBlueHairedGirl: Yuu has been grateful ever since being adopted by Isshin and becoming a maid of his household. Henceforth, she's very aware of her social limitations and feels self-conscious whenever Teppei treats her as an equal (and even chastises him for it), or as the other main characters did in the HotSpringsEpisode. She does agree to address Teppei on a FirstNameBasis, though still adding "[[UsefulNotes/JapanesePronouns -sama]]" to it, upon insistence. Additionally, she reveals her skills as a [[spoiler:computer hacker during the RescueArc, when she and the other maids of the Arima household access the hotel server from their computer laboratory]].

** In fact, many fans go so far as to [[FanNickname call her by that name]].

* CornerOfWoe: Invoked during the HotSpringsEpisode. Yuu finds it unacceptable when the other girls insist on treating her as if she's of the same peerage as they are[[note]]Charlotte, Sylvia, and Seika are princesses, whereas Yuu is a maid[[/note]], causing Yuu to turn super deformed and assert she's just a maid.

* IfItsYouItsOkay: The guys are naturally caught peeping at the girls during the HotSpringsEpisode and are lambasted for being middle-schoolers. Yuu, however, wouldn't have mind if Teppei asked her for a peek; the rest of girls are flabbergasted by her remark.

* {{Meido}}: Yuu, who doubles as a romantic interest [[spoiler:and a highly skilled computer hacker]].
* MythologyGag: Sylvia is the focus for the H-[=OVAs=], but Teppei gets daydreams of Yuu "servicing" him anyway.

* CornerOfWoe: In the HotSpringsEpisode, a SuperDeformed Yuu cringes shakily in the corner of the girls' room, in a comical moment where she's crying and frightened of being relieved of her maid duties.

* SexyDiscretionShot: In the TV anime, Charlotte is ''very'' grateful to Teppei [[spoiler: rescuing her from Haltman]] and shows her appreciation in a... very un-ladylike fashion. The audience doesn't see what happens, but her lines and Sylvia's reaction to the display of affection tells the whole story.
