When she falls in love with Kazushi, her harmony is broken and her existence starts to wane. She has a chance of survival if she has her memories of Kazushi erased... but both Mei and Kazushi decide to let her live happily whatever little time she's got left. Even if all the other characters congratulate Kazushi on his bravery, well, the fact is that it's ''his'' fault Mei's going to die]].

* CoversAlwaysLie: OK, it's not that big of a lie, but... see that cover up there? It features Haruka, Natsume and Mizuki; Natsume and Haruka are important to the main story of the game, but Mizuki isn't. Mei's story is also strongly linked to the main story, so she'd have been, probably, a better choice for the cover. Maybe Overdrive went for a "schoolgirl" theme...

* MythologyGag: The Philosopher's Stone? Hommunculus? Turning Lead into Gold? Are we sure Edelweiss didn't read Goethe's {{Faust}}?

* LighterAndSofter: Eiden Fantasia. No life-and-death situations, no tearjerking [[DownerEnding Downer Endings]], no angst, a [[TenchiSolution Harem Ending]] and the most villanous character only wants to [[ShareTheMalePain chop Kazushi's dick off]] (and for a good reason).

* BewareTheNiceOnes: The role of the Principal varies greatly from route to route. In Mei's route, she's mildly obstructive with traces of a dark past. In Haruka's route she starts pretty evil, but eventually becomes a tragic figure. Aside from some details, she's pretty much absent of Ran's route, but on Mizuki's... hoo boy. [[spoiler: She pretty much enters full-blown BigBad mode, blinking in and out of existence, launching people into the air and trying to hack Kazushi's legs with an axe just to prove a point]]. As noted on LighterAndSofter, she's not that bad in Eiden Fantasia.

* CovertPervert: According to Sakura, Rin wears pretty raunchy lingerie. [[spoiler:In Eiden Fantasia you actually discover that she does, but she's not that much of a pervert, even if her route starts with her having some pretty perverted dreams and she really lets herself loose during the [[TenchiSolution True End]]]].
** For someone who claims not to be interested in sex Mizuki is ''very'' knowledgeble in the subject.

* EveryoneCanSeeIt: During Ran's route, everyone else is surprised when they hear that she and Kazushi aren't already dating.
* {{Gonk}}: Appo, Fusen (who has a nice body but a very weird face) and Rei, who is a BrawnHilda of the "overly muscular" persuasion.

* TheLadette: You know how there's a lot of things that show up as pure FanService in an {{Eroge}}, well [[GenreSavvy Ran does too.]] In fact two [=CGs=] come about only because Ran took you there.

* MoneyFetish: Ran's mind seems to be absolutely transfixed in money, so much as to actually disregard her own safety to rescue a burning wallet. [[spoiler: There's, of course, a reason for that, though it's pretty dumb]].

* {{Necromantic}}: [[spoiler: The Principal, on a way. Also, [[DespairEventHorizon in Haruka's route]], Kazushi]]

* SexyBacklessOutfit: Ran in her normal clothes, she even, nonchalantly, points this out when the guys go crazy over someone's bra going missing.
* SkinshipGrope: Sakura does this to Rin often enough.

* StalkerWithACrush: Haruka veers dangerously towards this trope during the first half of the game, even using her influence with the Principal to be allowed near Kazushi when she shouldn't. [[spoiler: Actually subverted: Haruka has been stalking Kazushi because the Principal ordered her to... for her own dark reasons]]
* TheNicknamer: Natsume never gets any name right but Kazushi's, but it's implied that she does it on purpose. For her, Rin and Sakura are Umeko and Suzu, Haruka is Ao-chan, and Mei is Yagi-sensei.
** Sakura also qualifies (Harucchi, Harucchi, [[MostAnnoyingSound Harucchi]])
* TheUnintelligible: Panchu. His text dialog reads fine, but his voiced lines sound like hushed gibberish.
** In Eiden Fantasia his text dialog is mostly unintelligible too.

* ToughLove: Prof. Yagami is a firm believer of this. Prof. Ibuki does not agree.

* CerebusSyndrome: The first game is an extremely blatant example of this. (with the exception of Ran's route, which is pretty tame overall) During the first half of the game, the protagonist gets chased around by talking road signs, takes part in beach episodes and slumber parties, gets labelled a pervert more than once and his biggest problem is that he just can't manage to get laid. Then he gets a girlfriend, sleeps with her and things rapidly go south afterwards. After his chosen girl [[is imprisoned in another dimension/is permanently crippled/starts fading out of existence/dies outright]] he quickly realizes that those times where all he had to worry about was his virginity maybe weren't so bad after all.

Not to be confused with [[ValkyriaChronicles the tank]].

* BlindingBangs: Kazushi, when his character sprite appears in Mizuki's route, keeping him effectively faceless even when seen from the front.

* MeaningfulName: Two, mainly: Mizuki: Mizu means "water", and the first time you find her is while she's swimming, naked. Also, Haruka; "Haru" means "Spring", and the first time you find her she is in a bed of flowers. Naked.

* FridgeHorror: Ran's route. Wait, what's going to happen when the Principal comes back from the mainland [[spoiler: and sees Kazushi and Ran basically destroyed everything she has been working on for the last 50 years?]]
** Also, they mention that the fact that [[spoiler: Mei, the [[ArtificialHuman Homunculus]], is still alive is a miracle on itself. Even if Kazushi doesn't make her fall in love with him, her very existence is hanging on threads. So, in all the other routes, Mei's also going to inevitably vanish, probably without even knowing why]].
* FridgeLogic: So, the Nobleman's Stone [[spoiler: is not powerful enough to permanently cure Mizuki's legs, but it can '''revive''' the dead Haruka?]] Oooookay...

* NightmareFuel: '''Panchu in Haruka's route'''. ''Omigod Panchu what happened to your face please don't kill me please don't kill me''. You can ''enjoy'' his Demon Form in the BadEnding and in Eiden Fantasia, too, but his transformation in Haruka's route is the most sudden and startling one, even if it's always played for laughs.
** In Natsume's route, the sudden and semi-graphic [[spoiler:beheading of Appo]] can be ''very'' startling. [[spoiler: [[AllJustADream Luckily...]]]]

Edelweiss takes place on Eiden Island, an island containing the all-girls school of Eiden Academy that teaches alchemy. The protagonist, Kazushi, and his friends go to the island trying to score with some of the girls there; Haruka, the sweet granddaughter of the Principal, Mizuki the tomboyish girl who loves swimming, Ran, a feisty money-loving girl with [[TheBarnum a touch of]] [[RanmaOneHalf Nabiki]], Natsume, the mysterious freshman that seems to be at odds with the Principal, and Mei, the beautiful teacher without a past. However, it doesn't quite turn out as he planned, since the whole island is full of wonders and secrets...

Eiden Fantasia stars Kazushi again, and features Rin and Sakura (no, not ''that'' [[FateStayNight Rin and Sakura]]), the two most popular heroines of the original that didn't have their own routes.

* AmbiguousSituation: [[spoiler:It's not made clear whether or not Mei's ending is a reincarnation romance situation or not. The girl looks like her, reminds Kazushi of her, has a meaningful name and has a kind of attachment to Kazushi, but he personally thinks that's a little convenient.]]

* BetterThanItSounds: Rin's route in Eiden Fantasia: Kazushi had an accident and his dick [[ShareTheMalePain snapped in half]]. Luckily, a local god attaches to his dick just in time to try and repair it. This doesn't really sound like a touching story of love, friendship and self-sacrifice, but it is.
