* HeroesPreferSwords: Of course. Only one of the main characters uses a proper gun, and even then it's a rifle [[ImprobableUseOfAWeapon that is more effective at healing wounds than at inflicting them]].

Discussed via PM with the other troper. The battle doesn't qualify as a Luck Based Mission since getting aggro off Shulk so that the boss doesn't attack him is something the player has under their control.
* LuckBasedMission: An extremely egregious example in the first fight against "Mysterious Face". It's a HopelessBossFight, impossible to win because he can't be hurt by the monado or anything else, and his attacks are guaranteed to KO whoever they hit and the battlefield is generally too small to escape their range. It's supposed to go into a cutscene once one of your party members gets KO'd... but for whatever reason, if Shulk is the one "Mysterious Face" chooses to KO, you just go straight to game over.

I think you may have been talking about a different boss battle. This is one where you can't hurt him at all and whether or not you succeed depends entirely on whether he chooses to attack you or your party members.

That's a Hopeless Boss Battle. What you're supposed to do is manage to take down his health into a certain range, which is perfectly viable if you're not extremely underleveled.
