** There are several curious matchups: for example, you can put normal Sion against Sion Tatari, despite the fact that both exist in separate timelines. Even more curious if you put any of them against [[spoiler:The Dust Of Osiris]].
** Or, what about putting normal characters against Tatari avatars, such as Shiki Tohno Vs. Shiki Nanaya?
** Or what about normal Akiha Vs. Vermillion Akiha? Or any of tham against Giant Akiha?
** Or Arcueid Vs. Red Arcueid, or Vs. [[spoiler:Archetype Earth]].

That really does seem like natter to me. Likewise, Mikiya and Tohno\'s similarities are solely looks, as Mikya is the eternal nice guy while Tohno is more of a moody teenager.

** Because she already fell for a Tohno Shiki look-alike: Mikiya Kokuto. [[spoiler:They have a daughter.]]
** Not to mention that Tohno Shiki and Mikiya Kokuto are not only identical in appearance but are also very similar in personality and in ability to attract women. If Mikiya did not exist, given enough time I'm willing to bet that the Tohno/Nanaya gland would had work its charms. Granted, Mikiya had to really push to gain Ryougi's favor, something that Tohno may not be willing to do since he's already got a harem, one that would kill him for bringing in yet another woman.

*** The Nanaya Shiki shown in Melty Blood and Kagetsu Tohya is not "what Shiki would have become," it is simply the manifestation of his fear of what he might become and can be a completely irrational character since fears can be irrational. Even had he been raised as a Nanaya, he most likely would had simply been an assassin who kills because its his job and not because he's sadistic. Even that is unlikely since his father did not want that kind of life for him.
