* ATasteOfPower: An interesting example in that it happens relatively late in the game, as [[spoiler: Brad is force fed Joy by Buzzo, leading to a [[MushroomSamba hallucination sequence]] where [[DuelBoss Brad fights Sticky alone]]. Said fight has Brad amped up on Joy the whole time, dealing massive damage all the while. As such, said encounter ends up showing just what Joy is capable of if one was previously abstaining from it, and can tempt you into taking more, [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration just like Brad’s deteriorating mental state and growing need of said drug]]]].

** Areas or key items are frequently blocked off by extremely difficult fights all over the place, but this is nowhere more prevalent than in the first hub area. While some exploration is possible, you can't progress to the next area without defeating Charmy the joy mutant, which is basically impossible without a full party and some firebombs, except the only generator in this area is blocked off by Oak Tree Steve and his Rando soldier pals, meaning you'll realize pretty quickly that the game wants you to go to the area with the bar first to recruit Olan and get some better gear.

** Lardy Hernandez' skill allows buddy to randomly generate an item for 3 TP while in combat, referencing his status as Olathe's food supplier. This can be anything from a Nugget to a Rando Ration, and also will randomly generate the [[PlotCoupon Clean Water]].
** Vega Van Dam's skill allows Buddy to potentially inflict Blind on all the enemies she's currently facing, making it great for crowd fights, especially after [[spoiler:Rando leaves Buddy]]. This directly copies the Flash ability he uses in his fight.
** Mr. Beautiful's skill allows buddy to apply the unique Pacified debuff to both herself and her enemies, preventing them both from attacking for 2 turns and enabling Buddy to buff herself or heal up. When they lose Pacified they will become Unruly for a number of turns, preventing them from being Pacified again to [[ObviousRulePatch stop the player from spamming it]]. This references Mr. Beautiful's status as a highly-respected MartialPacifist.
** Dice Mahone's skill gives Buddy a ton of TP [[PowerAtAPrice at the cost of]] giving her [[RandomEffectSpell a random status effect]]. It can be either good or bad, and can make or break an encounter depending on the outcome. This references how he was a notorious gambler.
** Sindy Gallows's skill applies a unique status effect which enables Buddy to [[LastChanceHitPoint survive a fatal hit at 1 HP]], before [[ItOnlyWorksOnce disappearing and being unusable for the rest of the battle]]. This obviously alludes to how he [[spoiler:[[MadeOfIron somehow survived]] becoming a HumanPincushion]].
** Big Lincoln grants Buddy the use of his Wolf Stance, which allows Buddy to Guard, increase her TP and increase all TP gained from incoming attacks for one turn. This directly copies a move he uses to increase his Defense during his battle.

* UselessUsefulSpell: Lardy's Warlord Skill, Supply Chain, gives Buddy a random item at the cost of 3 TP. Sure, it's decent for gathering supplies(up to and including Rando Rations, which are very useful), but the fact that it has to be used during combat makes Buddy an easy target for her foes while she's generating items. * MissingMom: Arguably, the biggest factor to the very screwed-up Armstrong family was having no matriarch for the protagonists, as WordOfGod confirmed Brad and Lisa’s mother passed away when the children were still young. Brad never had a wife - which led to Buddy having no mother figure and [[spoiler: Mrs.[[spoiler:Mrs. Yado, Buddy’s biological mother, was killed by Dr. Yado, himself.]] himself]]. Brad’s best friend, Sticky, also mentions his father most of the time, but no mother was referenced at all.

* ThereAreNoTherapists: Neither Lisa nor Brad seem to have ever gotten any kind of help for their trauma, as Lisa [[spoiler: commits suicide at a fairly young age]], and Brad is still traumatized to the point of hallucination and substance dependency.

* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: It is almost impossible to tell where exactly Olathe is in the United States, since it contains one of almost every biome imaginable. There is a real life town in Kansas called Olathe, but being in Kansas it obviously doesn't have swamps, sheer cliffs and plateaus, mountains, deserts and especially not ''boatable water and islands''. It's also unclear how ''big'' Olathe is supposed to be, so it's hard to tell if TheMountainsOfIllinois is at work here.
