Also, although never confirmed by Jansson, it seems pretty clear that Tofslan and Vifslan (Thingumy and Bob in the English translation) refer to Tove and her first girlfriend Vivica Bandler. Jansson's boyfriend in the 1940s, Atos Wirtanen, and his old green hat were probably the inspiration behind Snufkin.
