He is also credited with reprising his role as Mayor Jones, who doesn't appear in this episode either beside a name drop.

This is never explained why or how it happens, but it can be assumed that the portal opening, also sucked the lava? Unlikely. One cool fact is that now Crystal Cove resembles destroyed floating mountains, floating in the middle of space, similair to where Nova was talking in the opening.
