* TheShelfOfMovieLanguishment[=/=]ReleaseDateChange: The game was originally intended to be released on October 3, 2001, however the release was pushed back almost three weeks, to October 22, 2001. Dan Houser claimed that the main reason the game's release was postponed was due to how close Rockstar Games's head office was to the World Trade Center, and work that had to be done was made impossible due to the circumstances of 9/11.

* KillerApp: For the UsefulNotes/PlayStation2. Granted, the console had achieved the rare feat of utterly dominating the console market from the very day it was released, but this was one of the first games to truly show off the system's capabilities, and alongside several other releases like the earlier ''VideoGame/GranTurismo 3: A-Spec'' and the later ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid2SonsOfLiberty'' cemented it as the system to beat.

** A character named Darkel was scheduled to appear in the game, before being removed. He would have given Claude a number of missions that would have involved committing acts of terrorism. Contrary to popular belief, he wasn't cut because of 9/11, but some time prior because he [[BizarroEpisode didn't fit with the rest of the game]]. However, pictures of Darkel can still be found on the GTA III website, his voice actor (Bill Fiore) is still credited in the manual, and while most of his missions also were cut alongside him, some were turned into Rampages or given to other bosses (El Burro's mission "I Scream, You Scream", where you bomb a Mafia family, being the only known example).

** The large planes at the airport were coded to be able to explode when shot at with the rocket launcher, but it was hastily disabled after the 9/11 attacks happened. Editing the code can allow you reactivate the ability to blow up planes again.
*** The next game, Vice City, sort of allow this again but only for the blimp, and only an attack helicopter can blow it up. The circling and landing, taking off large planes has no collision though.
** An entire pedestrian group is dummied out: South Area, which presumably is either referring to Torrington or Bedford Point in Staunton Island. Both use the shopping pedestrian groups instead.

** Some fans are completely sure that Claude was originally conceived as a speaking protagonist, because of a leftover sound from GTA 2 appearing in a trailer for the game. Rockstar denies that Claude was ever supposed to speak, though.

** Due to being ordered around for the entire game, before his real name was revealed, Claude was referred to as "Fido", the name Maria refers to Claude as when he is ordered by Salvatore Leone to be her driver.
** The area where the game's opening scene where Catalina betrays Claude has been dubbed "Ghost Town" not only due to the area being inaccessible through normal means, but the area itself is barren without any sign of life if one were to access the area.
