----
* ActingForTwo:
** Creator/ChrisPhillips voices El Burro and Marty Chonks.
** Walter Mudu voices King Courtney and D-Ice.
* AllStarCast: Despite Rockstar not yet being a household name, they nonetheless managed to pull in an impressive set of character actors, often those known for their crime and mafia films: Creator/FrankVincent, Creator/JoePantoliano, Creator/MichaelMadsen, Creator/MichaelRapaport, Creator/DebiMazar, Creator/KyleMacLachlan, and Creator/RobertLoggia.
* DescendedCreator: Dan Houser voices the pedestrian known as the "British Businessman" and the British caller with a masochistic nanny complex on Chatterbox.
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: After 9/11, Rockstar North changed the paint jobs on the police cars so that they didn't resemble those of the [[UsefulNotes/NewYorkCityCops NYPD]]. Some pedestrian dialogue was also changed and one mission that mentioned terrorism was removed. There was insufficient time between the disaster and publication for extensive alterations. As mentioned in the book ''Jacked: The Outlaw Story of GTA'', the Houser brothers mulled about cancelling the game as they felt it was too soon to release such a violent game taking place in a locale not unlike New York. Thankfully, Rockstar pushed through with the game, albeit with some cuts and changes made out of sensitivity. Not that the series wouldn't attract controversy for the rest of its existence, though.
* DummiedOut:
** A character named Darkel was scheduled to appear in the game, before being removed. He would have given Claude a number of missions that would have involved committing acts of terrorism. Contrary to popular belief, he wasn't cut because of 9/11, but some time prior because he [[BizarroEpisode didn't fit with the rest of the game]]. However, pictures of Darkel can still be found on the GTA III website, his voice actor (Bill Fiore) is still credited in the manual and end credits, and while most of his missions also were cut alongside him, some were turned into Rampages or given to other bosses (El Burro's mission "I Scream, You Scream", where you bomb a Mafia family, being the only known example).
** Another character named Curtly is credited in the manual for the game, although nothing else is known about him apart from his intended voice actor (the late Curtis L. [=McClarin=]).
** The Airtrains at the airport were coded to be able to explode when shot at with the rocket launcher, but it was hastily disabled after the 9/11 attacks happened. Editing the code can allow you restore that functionality.
*** The next game, ''Vice City'', sort of brings this back but only for the blimp, and only an attack helicopter can blow it up. The circling and landing, taking off large planes has no collision though.
** An entire pedestrian group is dummied out: South Area, which presumably is either referring to Torrington or Bedford Point on Staunton Island. Both use the shopping pedestrian groups instead.
** In the GXT file there's some dummied out text that never made it to the final game. For example, there's pager text for Marty Chonks and Donald Love that never gets called in the game itself.
* FlipFlopOfGod: Rockstar never gives a non-contradicting answer on whether Claude is the same as Claude Speed from ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAuto2''. When asked about it, they said that he was probably the same character, but there were probably also a lot of car thieves named Claude out there.
* KillerApp: For the Platform/PlayStation2. Granted, the console had achieved the rare feat of utterly dominating the console market from the very day it was released, but this was one of the first games to truly show off the system's capabilities, and alongside several other releases like the earlier ''VideoGame/GranTurismo 3: A-Spec'' and the later ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid2SonsOfLiberty'' cemented it as the system to beat.
* LimitedSpecialCollectorsUltimateEdition: Coinciding with game's [[MilestoneCelebration 10th]] [[UpdatedRerelease Anniversary Edition]] for [=iOS=] and Android, Rockstar Games collaborated with Slideshow Collectables and also released a limited edition 1:6 scale figurine of Claude, which featured various weapons from the game (plus a few that weren't or not included), changeable hand parts, and his prison jumpsuit as seen in the game's opening cutscene. Only 1,500 units were produced.
* NoPortForYou: A [=GameCube=] port was [[http://www.gamecubicle.com/news-nintendo_gamecube_grand_theft_auto.htm rumored]] but was never released.
* ReleaseDateChange: The game was originally intended to be released on October 3, 2001, however the release was pushed back almost three weeks, to October 22, 2001. Dan Houser claimed that the main reason the game's release was postponed was due to how close Rockstar Games's head office was to the World Trade Center, and work that had to be done was made impossible due to the circumstances of 9/11.
* ShrugOfGod: [[spoiler:Did Claude shoot Maria?]] "No one knows for sure what happened there" is the official line.
* UrbanLegendOfZelda:
** Some fans are completely sure that Claude was originally conceived as a speaking protagonist, because of a leftover sound from ''GTA 2'' appearing in a trailer for the game. Rockstar denies that Claude was ever supposed to speak, though.
** There were a ton of rumors about what content had been cut after 9/11, including a persistent one that Donald Love's last mission would have involved crashing a plane into a building, despite WordOfGod saying that there were never plans for large aircraft.
** Another one was the Maibatsu Monstrosity being drivable.
** And that Fernando Martinez was hidden somewhere in the game and had missions for you.
** That you could get to the lighthouse or the observatory.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Several omissions and changes to the game happened before the game was released.
** Design documents revealed that the game was originally made for the Platform/SegaDreamcast, but the system's declining sales prompted the team to move on to the [=PS2=].
** According to Seamus Blackley, the game was pitched to Creator/{{Microsoft}} as an Platform/{{Xbox}} exclusive title at one point, but Microsoft rejected it.
** Online multiplayer was originally planned, but was scrapped early on to focus on ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoViceCity''. Text strings for it, as well as a "Powered by [=GameSpy=]" logo, are still in the game's code. It would take until ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV'' for the series to get online multiplayer in an official capacity.
** The song "Back to the Streets" by Tom Novy, which was featured in a German trailer for the game, was removed, with no explanation as to why. Novy himself was also going to physically appear in the game.
** There was one song from Lips 106 ("Wash It Off" by Marydancin) that was also planned but removed.
** In the beta version, the Francis International Airport was originally located on the northern end of Staunton Island before relocating to Shoreside Vale.
** There was originally going to be [[https://tcrf.net/Grand_Theft_Auto_III#Butler a butler]], who was meant to be used once in a cutscene for the mission ''Waka-Gashira Wipeout!''. The Butler's models and textures can still be found in gta3.img and txd.img.
** At the end of the game, there were going to be alternate endings, and Claude could choose to either spare or kill Catalina, two concepts which were later used in ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoIV''.
** According to a [[https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EIdn5tBXkAAQmfG.jpg:large design document]], Kenji (then named Toshiro) would not be killed by Claude on Donald Love's orders. He was going to give missions in Shoreside Vale once it was unlocked and eventually be murdered by the Colombian Cartel.
** Many things in this game were changed and/or removed as mentioned in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUI0moGiNuw&ab_channel=GTASeriesVideos# this video]].
