His career at Disney as an animator was already doing poorly, and the studio was giving him various odd jobs until his contract ran out, including some unused designs for ''Disney/TheBlackCauldron''. The studio gave him some money to make a live-action short, and were so appauled by what he turned in that he was fired on the spot for "wasting" it. He was fortunate enough to have [[Film/PeeWeesBigAdventure another project to fall back on]], kicking off his directing career and allowing him to continue working in show business until [[WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas he and Disney eventually made peace]].
