* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Harry cruelly says Asta helps everyone simply to get love, while D'Arcy's a "bottomless pit of need", so the two feed off each other. Both however find his analysis all too accurate later, in spite of themselves.

Both however find his analysis all too accurate later, in spite of themselves. They get into a heated argument in the next episode over exactly these flaws, but it helps them to air their grievances.

* CouchGag: The openings start with ever-changing IKEA-like instructions on how an alien should act like a human, giving do's and don't's.

Adding spoiler tag to later episode detail

** The idea of Harry having a job at all is dropped after "The Green Glow," even though that episode strongly implies that he needs one. "An Alien in New York" reveals that he discovered a "money bag" inside the cabin filled with numerous stacks of $100 bills, apparently a pay-off to the human Harry Vanderspeigle for having killed Sam Hodges. But this still doesn't explain why he was so worried about getting a job, unless the money bag was a later discovery. Once again, it ends up coming back in the second season when Harry again agrees to be the town doctor.

Added DiffLines:

* AutoErotica: In season 3, Harry gleefully tells Asta he and his girlfriend had sex inside her car repeatedly.

Added DiffLines:

* HappilyAdopted:
** After her mom abandoned her, Dan had raised Asta (we don't learn what became of her birth father). She fully considers Dan to be her father, and they clearly love each other (he's a bit overprotective due to her {{domestic abuse}} from Jimmy though).
** Jay has an overall happy relationship with her adoptive mom (aside from the ordinary spats).

Added DiffLines:

* IHaveThisFriend: Kate tries to ask Liv in Season 3 about some signs of having been abducted by aliens, talking about it "theoretically". Liv sees through this instantly though, and realizes Kate's worried she's been abducted.

Added DiffLines:

* InterspeciesRomance: In Season 3, Harry starts a relationship with a woman from an [[BirdPeople avian species]].

Added DiffLines:

* MakingLoveInAllTheWrongPlaces: In Season 3 Harry starts having sex with his girlfriend all over the place, including the bathroom and up a tree.

Added DiffLines:

* QueerEstablishingMoment: It turns out that Jay is into girls when in Season 3 her adoptive mom mentions her new girlfriend.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Harry cruelly says Asta helps everyone simply to get love, while D'Arcy's a "bottomless pit of need", so the two feed off each other. Both however find his analysis all too accurate later, in spite of themselves.

Added DiffLines:

* ArtisticLicenseReligion: Sahar's explanation of Halloween being a holiday celebrating evil spirits and Satan stems more from propaganda to demonize it. In truth, Halloween is a holiday that has theorized origins in different traditions such as Christianity and Samhain. One belief of the holiday is to show reverence to the deceased. Another aspect that comes from Irish immigrants is the Jack-o'-Lantern, which is used to ward off evil spirits.

** Harry saying something out loud, and then the audience being presented with his thoughts, these being the meanly comedic opposite of whatever he just said.

Added DiffLines:

* HypocriticalHumor: When the foot of the original Harry is found in a lake, Harry is naturally keen to get rid of it, or at least get his hands on it. D’Arcy rebukes him:
-->'''D’Arcy''': [''to Harry''] Can you be a little less needy and a little more sensitive? Somebody’s died, so… [''to Sheriff''] Can we see the foot?
-->'''Asta''': What’s going on? Who does the foot belong to?
-->'''D’Arcy''': Yes, and can we touch it?

redefined trope

* TheRez: [[EverytownAmerica Patience]] is within driving distance of a Ute reservation where many of Asta and Dan's extended family and tribe live. Notable in largely averting the standard varieties of the trope.
