* ADateWithRosiePalms: The greatest discovery of Germaine's young life.
* AerithAndBob: Della decided to name her girls after strong female role models. Her [[OutnumberedSibling one son]], Wyatt, got off lightly in comparison.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Aretha, insofar as she can bear the company of any other human being.
* AndTheRest: Any family member under the age of five is collectively described as 'The Babbies'.
* CloudCuckoolander: Yoko, whose greatest fear in life is her uncle's creepy looking hands.
* DoubleEntendre: Does Della like it backwards? Yeah. Della likes it backwards.
* EmotionlessGirl: Aretha. It makes it easier to deal with being Germaine's sister. A lot of [[DeadpanSnarker deadpan snarking]] also helps.
* EvilMatriarch: Although [[TheGhost we never actually see her]], everyone is afraid of Della's mother. Including Della. And Grampy.
* GenkiGirl: Germaine. A thousand times, Germaine.
* GirlOnGirlIsHot: Germaine's justification for coming on to her sister Yoko to impress [[UnrequitedLove Lee Rhind]]. [[ArmorPiercingSlap Aretha is not impressed]].
* HandsOffParenting: Della, to a large extent. Not that she's a neglectful mother - she's just happy to let her kids make their own mistakes.
* HippieParents: It's never clear whether Grampy is a tad vague because he's a ScatterbrainedSenior or just because he's [[TheStoner a bit high all the time]]. Averted with Della who, though she homeschools her children, maintains her own vegetable garden and favours fossicking over supermarket shopping, is definitely no GranolaGirl.
* HomeschooledKids: Something of an InformedAttribute, as we never actually see any homeschooling going on.
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: Aretha considers herself a victim of this within her own family.
* TheLadette: Della, to a certain extent.
* LovableSexManiac: Some of the things from which Germaine manages to derive sexual pleasure: A letterbox. The theme music that plays before Parliamentary Question Time. Her own nose.
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: Yes and no. There are six children in the family, but because they are [[HomeschooledKids homeschooled]] we rarely see anyone outside the family.
* NoPeriodsPeriod: Averted very early on.
* ParentalSexualitySquick: Poor Aretha gets an unwanted dose of this after accidentally witnessing her grandparents in the throes of … ew. According to Della, a fairy has its wings ripped off every time her father [[TooMuchInformation discusses his sex life]].
* RedheadsAreUncool: Aretha is a proud exponent, and a notable aversion of the FieryRedhead.
* RejectionAffection: Germaine continues to pursue Lee Rhind even after he repeatedly refers to her as a 'bummer'. And throws a dog at her.
* UnrequitedLoveLastsForever: Vigorously averted by Germaine at the end of Series 1.
