Out story begins at the Springfield Mall, where Army recruiters ask Jimbo, Dolph and Kearney (who are chasing after Bart and Milhouse) to join the army. After they turn down the offer, the Army decides that even the dumbest teenagers in the world's dumbest city are too smart to join the Army and start targeting children. They hold an assembly at Springfield Elementary, where life in the Army is presented as being an awesome, high-tech adventure, which gets the students to enlist and join when they turn 18.

When Bart shows his family his DEP form, Marge is outraged and sends Homer to the Army Recruiting Station and get Bart out of his contract. He successfully does it, but the recruiters use Homer's gullibility to get him to join. Homer is then sent to an Army base, where he infuriates his hard-nosed colonel. While the majority of the recruits are placed in the infantry, Homer and the dumbest recruits are sent to a rehabilitation platoon. The recruits are given the role of the opposing force in a live fire exercise. But Homer mistakes the gunfire for a Chinese New Year celebration and sets off a flare, which blinds the colonel and his men. Homer and his unit run from the army and flee into Springfield.

The Army invades Springfield searching for Homer, who has sneaked back home. Homer, while in bed with Marge, is spotted by a camera-equipped mini-helicopter and a ''LooneyTunes''-esque chase ensues, with Homer destroying the copter by trapping it in a room full of dynamite. To even the odds, the Army then rounds up all the fat and bald men in Springfield, while Homer hides in the Reticent Castle. Marge rallies the townspeople to help her get rid of the Army and they spike the town's reservoir, intoxicating the soldiers. The colonel is then faced by Marge the rallied townspeople. The Army surrenders, but Homer has to finish his enlistment, so he becomes a recruiter at the mall.

This episode is one of the most criticized episodes in the show's history for its portrayal of the U.S. Army. What's worse is that ''FamilyGuy'' came out with a similar episode (the one where Stewie and Brian are enlisted in the Army after trying to get Chris out of being drafted when he's 18) that ''didn't'' attack the military as badly as this episode did.
