Following Chazz Nygaard's arrest, Lester Nygaard consoles his sister-in-law, Kitty, who believes her husband is guilty. Shortly afterward, Lester tosses out Pearl's belongings, beginning a new life. Later, Gina Hess, accompanied by her sons, angrily storms into Lester's office, demanding payment from Sam's cancelled insurance policy and accusing Lester of duping her for sex. Lester sternly rebuffs her and her two boys, impressing his co-worker Linda Park with his newfound assertiveness.

Meanwhile, Solverson returns to work and unsuccessfully attempts to reopen the Lester Nygaard investigation. At the Duluth hospital, Malvo kills a police guard then tells Mr. Wrench that he killed Mr. Numbers. Malvo gives Mr. Wrench the handcuff key and invites him to look him up later, if he "still feels raw" about Mr. Numbers' murder.

* CampingACrapper: Malvo strangles a cop taking a leak at the hospital bathroom.

* SuspectIsHatless: All Budge and Pepper can come up with is a photo from an ATM which identifies the suspect as "white male". That said when we later get to see the shot, it's clearly Malvo.

* WhateverHappenedToTheMouse: Malvo sets Wrench free, and he doesn't appear for the rest of the season. [[spoiler:He returns a little over halfway through season three]].

* AsianAirhead: Lester's second wife, Linda, sure isn't the smartest tool in the shed.

* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Linda was asking Lester on a date when Gina barges in and loudly berates Lester for having sex with her in exchange for services he never intended to perform. After Lester frightens her off and staples her two sons in the face, Linda is only even more impresses with him.

* YourCheatingHeart: The only reason Lester discovers Malvo at the Vegas hotel is because he wanted to flirt with some women at the bar while his wife went back up to their room to sleep.

Following his brother Chazz Nygaard's arrest, Lester Nygaard consoles his sister-in-law, Kitty, who believes her husband is guilty. Shortly afterward, Lester tosses out Pearl's belongings, beginning a new life. Later, Gina Hess angrily storms into Lester's office, demanding payment from Sam's insurance policy and accusing Lester of having duped her and taken advantage of her sexually. Lester initially pretends he will make some calls on her behalf, but when her sons try to bully Lester, he hits them with a stapler, which in turn intimidates all three of the surviving Hess family members, and they back off. Additionally, Lester tells Mrs. Hess that Sam's having stopped paying the premium on the policy indicates she won't get paid. Lester's dominant performance impresses his coworker Linda.

Meanwhile, Molly Solverson returns to work and unsuccessfully attempts to reopen the Lester Nygaard investigation. At the Duluth hospital, Lorne Malvo kills a police guard and gives Mr. Wrench the handcuff key to escape, telling him that he and Mr. Numbers came closer than anyone else ever had to besting Malvo. Malvo confesses that he killed Mr. Numbers and tells Wrench to come find him if he still wants revenge. In Fargo, FBI Agents Pepper and Budge, having been assigned to surveillance during Malvo's 22-homicide gun rampage and missed his having walked right by their car en route to entering the building, are demoted to file clerks.

A year passes, and Gus Grimly, now a mailman, is happily married to Molly Solverson as they eagerly await their first child's birth. In Las Vegas, Lester, who has married Linda, receives an award for Insurance Salesman of the Year. While at the hotel bar, Lester spots Malvo, who now sports grey hair and a goatee rather than brown hair and a full beard. While conversing with his companions, Malvo calls himself "Dr. Michaelson".

At Lester’s house, a package arrives containing his new washing machine. He tries it out before Kitty meets with him at his house and complains about the fallout she’s been having to deal with. She tells him that due to the vast number of things she’s had to sell, she’s boxed up Chazz’s old hunting gear as a gift. She kisses him on the cheek and leaves, and Lester begins happily throwing out all of Pearl’s old things.

Molly visits her dad’s diner and finds that more flowers have been sent to her from Duluth. She goes into the police office and presents to Bill all the loose ends with the case that Chazz’s arrest doesn’t explain. Bill doesn’t want to hear any of it, and tells Molly that she’ll just have to power through being dissatisfied with the way things wrapped up.

At the insurance office, Linda is about to invite Lester over for a date when Gina Hess storms in with her two sons and chews him out for her claim being denied. She tries threatening him into getting her money by the end of the day, to which Lester responds by stapling her sons’ faces. They leave and Linda admires her coworker’s gusto.

In Fargo, North Dakota, Webb Pepper and Bill Budge meet with their boss. He shows them into their new office--the file room in the abandoned part of the building.

Meanwhile, in Bemidji, the police officer guarding Wrench’s room takes a bathroom break and is promptly strangled with a belt by Malvo. Wrench awakes in his room to find Malvo sitting in the chair next to his bed. Malvo tells him that he’s unemployed in case he didn’t know, then hands him over the key to his handcuffs after telling him that he and Numbers got closer to killing him than anyone else ever did.

At Lou’s diner, the police staff celebrate Molly’s return. Molly confides in Ida about Gus and the flowers, and Ida thanks her for bringing in the man who killed her husband. The next day, Gus calls Molly while he’s on patrol and once again apologizes for shooting her. They agree to go to the upcoming Logging Festival together, and one year later in 2007, they’re HappilyMarried, with Gus now working as a mailman and Molly heavily pregnant with their first child together.

Pepper and Budge, still stuck working in the file room, rediscover the security photo of Malvo they taped to the wall when they were first moved. Molly, meanwhile, meets Bill’s new foster child, Tahir, who recounts the story of how he was lost on the way to live with Bill’s family only to be found by Bill himself over three months later. Meanwhile, Lester Nygaard is named Insurance Salesman of the Year 2007 in Las Vegas. He and his wife Linda return to their swanky hotel and she heads up to their room while Lester gets a drink. At the bar, however, Lester spies a man who looks like the one he met at the hospital almost a year ago.
