* ManOnFire: How Sampson dies.

* GenreSavvy: Diaz runs [[WholePlotReference a compressed version]] of Bane's plan from ''ComicBook/KnightFall''; take some kind of SuperSerum, get the hero to exhaust himself fighting released inmates and protecting innocents, then take on the battered, bruised, and abused hero. When they finally do fight, Diaz beats Ollie like a bongo drum.
** GenreBlindness: ...Right up until he kicks the on-the-ropes Ollie into Ollie's cell, monologues, threatens William and Felicity by implication, and says Ollie made her into a person who'd put a gun to Diaz's head. Which gives Ollie a second wind and the motivation to get up and introduce a shiv to Diaz's lung.

* KnifeNut: Somethings never change,eh Diaz?

* HeroicSecondWind: Combined with BerserkButton. Oliver is already on the ground, when Diaz taunts him about going after Felicity and William next, even ripping apart Oliver's picture of them. This gives Oliver sufficient enough motivation to get back up and put him down.

* AbsenteeActor: Oliver and Diaz are the only regulars to appear for most of the episode. Diggle and Felicity make brief, silent cameos at the ending.

* NotSoDifferent: Stanley tries to pull this card on Oliver. The latter just knocks him out in disgust.

* RealityEnsues: Oliver spent most of the episode fighting off the guards, working through a sedative, then fighting his way through an entire prison riot. SuperSerum or not, it's really no surprise that Diaz kicks his ass when they fight.

* EvilAllAlong: Stanley has been Oliver's sidekick for the entirety of season seven up to this point, and has consistently claimed that he was framed for his crimes. This episode throws all his sympathetic qualities out the window, and proves that Stanley is in fact a remorseless serial killer who's been manipulating Oliver the entire time.

* BreakTheHaughty: The guards are very dismissive about Oliver's warning about Diaz. It costs them dearly when Diaz takes the prison over and unleashes the inmates against the men who've been mistreating them for years. But luckily for them, Oliver doesn't hold a grudge and they forced to swallow their pride and follow his lead if they want to survive.

* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: When Turner finally sees the chance, he immmidiately turns on Brick, who threatened him in the past to get him to comply.

* RuleOfDrama: Felicity and Diggle wait for Ollie's release. Ollie and Felicity kiss, the camera pulls way, waaay back... and Digg apparently vanished so he doesn't break the mood.

* MustMakeAmends: Oliver vows to do this for Turner after realizing he helped frame it. Turner doesn't buy it... until he realizes Oliver was serious.
