I have added a method under which a character might exploit the trope.
* '''Exaggerated''': Billy smokes a joint and kills his family because he [[MarijuanaIsLSD hallucinates]] that they're all nine-foot-tall Series/{{Teletubbies}} with chainsaws. The drug is also why his first impulse is to attack them rather than to run away from them.

* '''Inverted''': Billy's brother Jimmy has suicidal depression which suddenly disappears when he takes a pill, and does not come back even when its effects wear off; drugs are subsequently portrayed as the ideal, consequence-free solution to all his problems.

That is NOT what this trope is.
'''Basic Trope''': Using drugs will have negative effects far beyond what would be typical in reality. Furthermore, they never have any positive effects: the only reason a character will use them is because of peer pressure.

If this trope is supposedly excessive, its inversion should be excessive as well.
* '''Inverted''': Billy's brother Jimmy, who until now had been depressed to the point of suicide, takes a pill and suddenly begins to appreciate the beautiful things in life in ways he'd never thought possible, an effect which stays with him long after the drug wears off.

* '''Defied''': "I'm getting so sick of those 'Oh noes! Drugs will ruin your life!' stories. That pot-smoking character is going to be totally predictable if we just jump on the bandwagon."
