The previous games explained that the conflict occurred when too many geth units began asking if their kind had souls, which freaked out the quarians since they never wanted to make AI. When they tried to shut down the geth, the geth fought back and almost wiped them out, to the point where only around one percent of the quarians remain. The third game maintains these details, but retcons exactly why the geth fought back initially; instead of self-preservation, it was initially in defense of other quarians who defended the geth, which calls into question how so many quarians were nearly genocided.

Shields, however, also had to be ''activated'' by abilities. The game's healing item, Medigel, could be used to heal--as could various powers. Weapons also used an "overheat" feature whereby ammunition was unlimited as long as the gun didn't overheat--after which, the gun required a cooldown.

The game also introduced ammo boxes to reduce downtime from ammunition scavenging. In addition, several abilities had beneficial effects which allowed them to instantly replenish health or shields, while others could use shields as a cost rather than cooldown, reducing downtime ''in'' battles, too.
** ''Videogame/MassEffectAndromeda'' brought back the missing RPG elements from the first game, but kept ''3'''s approach to shields and health. There's also a limited inventory. Unfortunately, the secrecy and isolation turns out to be totally ineffective as a security measure, given that the project ends up being compromised from within by a traitor.
** Pragia's isolation and aggressive botanic growth makes it ideal for just about anyone needing to keep their activities hidden from prying eyes - including scientists. Several years prior to the start of the series, Cerberus set up a research facility deep in the jungle and began experimenting on kidnapped [[MindOverMatter biotic]] children in an effort to create super-soldiers - even forcing them into gladiatorial games and conditioning them into enjoying violence through narcotic drugs. [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Jack]] is the only known survivor of this barbaric process [[spoiler: up until [[ArcVillain Aresh]] shows up]], and as such, her loyalty mission involves returning to the now-abandoned base and [[DestroyTheAbusiveHome blowing it up]].
** In the ''Overlord'' DLC, Aite is being used to hide Cerberus' efforts to [[HijackingCthulhu control the geth]], apparently because the planet will collide with its moon within the next two hundred years, discouraging major colonization attempts. With a population of less than two million settlers scattered across the planet, Cerberus can conduct Project Overlord in seclusion - to the point that it actually has ''four'' bases on different parts of Aite: a communications facility, a power station, a crashed geth ship being harvested for units, and the main lab. Predictably, by the time Shepard arrives, it's all gone horribly wrong.
** In the third game, Cerberus is found to be running a lab on Sanctum; with the harsh weather and the freezing temperatures keeping all but the most determined miners away from the planet, it operates largely undisturbed until Cerberus turns hostile and Shepard arrives to shut it down.
