**** The "Elder Gods" thing can cause big arguments among Lovecraft fans... but Nodens does show up outside the Dreamlands in "The Strange High House in the Mist", attended by Neptune, so he may not be entirely unique. He * does* seem to fit in with the "feeble gods of earth" of the Dreamlands, and that story does associate him with Dreamlands locations (despite his appearing in the waking world) ... but "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" kind of does present him as a rival of Nyarlathotep, so the Derlethian interpretation of Nodens isn't indefensible. (Some of Derleth's other stuff, like the elemental junk, on the other hand...)

*** "The Strange High House in the Mist" is strongly implied to be a gateway between the Dreamlands and the real world. Nodens is indeed some kind of adversary to Nyarlathotep in the Dreamlands, but has no presence outside it. This relationship is not further explored or explained by Lovecraft himself, but it's made clear that Nyarlathotep can control Nodens' servants if he feels like it, making Nodens a significantly weaker power.

*** Indeed, later in the same story Yog-Sothoth explicates what is in fact a major implicit premise behind the whole CthulhuMythos: practically everything we experience goes under this trope, including three-dimensional space, change and time, and the individuality of what we ordinarily think of as different creatures.

**** But that story was not written by Lovecraft himself, even though it's often falsely put in his name. He just corrected some expressions and spelling errors, and accepted it as fanfiction. It contradicts "The Silver Key" to which it's supposed to be a sequel at several points.

* In {{Supernatural}}, angels cannot be comprehended except by their true vessel. Anyone else who glimpses their true form has their eyes melted out of their head, and anyone else (or any''thing'' around anyone else) that is around their true voice experiences what basically amounts to tornado conditions. To even be comprehended, they must first take a vessel. Any improper vessel, even the next closes thing, will eventually explode under the power.

Yet he felt that it was not chance which built these things in his consciousness, but rather some vast reality, ineffable and undimensioned, which surrounded him and strove to translate itself into the only symbols he was capable of grasping. For no mind of Earth may grasp the extensions of shape which interweave in the oblique gulfs outside time and the dimensions we know.
