If this happens during the TimeSkip between two installments of a series, it can become rather uncomfortable the fans, who must suddenly start seeing TheProtagonist's former comrades as semi-strangers again. While groups of people grow close to each other and part ways again all the time in RealLife, this is always a gradual, continuous process; in fiction, on other hand, it is often fast-forwarded to save narrative space and comes across as an abrupt cut that forces the fans to adjust on the fly.
