Since he was a clumsy, [[GeekPhysique out-of-shape]] teenager with no combat experience, it was a good thing that Spider-Man was able to talk him out of it before he hurt himself. A few years later, he reemerged as the Steel Spider, having gotten into shape and learned some hand-to-hand fighting ability in the interim. After beating up some guys who'd attacked his girlfriend, he decided to hang up the costume but then reemerged during the ''ComicBook/CivilWar'' on the anti-registration side. His super-hero career apparently ended when he fought the Thunderbolts and Venom bit off and [[IAmAHumanitarian ate]] one of his arms and he was imprisoned in the Negative Zone.

The limbs aren't usually prehensile, and the more insectoid-looking ones are in fact often depicted with pointed tips, [[ArtisticLicenseBiology which isn't true to arachnid anatomy]] as detailed in the RealLife section. Some of the stranger variants are equipped with claws, hands, or cartoon strength static cling that allows the limbs to manipulate objects. Likewise, tentacle rather than spider based limbs can also be used as {{Tentacle Rope}}s.

Unclear what the value of adding real arachnids to this trope as examples.

[[folder:RealLife]]
* [[CaptainObvious Spiders themselves]] are the TropeMaker, [[{{Irony}} but also subvert the trope in one respect]]: the pointed leg tips aren't accurate. Spider legs are actually tipped with two small tarsal claws and a cluster of bristles which help them cling to surfaces and climb (close-up photo [[https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/472197/view/jumping-spider-foot-sem here]]). The reason we ''think'' spider legs are pointy is that because spiders themselves are often very small, their feet are so tiny that they can't be seen with the naked eye.
* The closest thing to this trope in RealLife is arguably the limbs of spider ''crabs'', which ''do'' have pointed tips (which is a trait of crustaceans, not insects or arachnids). The [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_spider_crab Japanese spider crab]] in particular is notable for having the largest leg span of any arthropod, at 3.7 metres (12.1 ft) from end to end.
