* The official English translation of ''I Think I Turned My Childhood Friend into a Girl'' by Seven Seas Entertainment rewrote Hiura, who is [[WholesomeCrossdresser a crossdressing boy]] in the original Japanese manga, into a transgender girl.

* In the 2006 Hebrew Translation of ''Literature/GoodOmens'', Pestilence (the white [[HorsemenOfTheApocalypse Horseman of the Apocalypse]] before Pollution took over) is referred to as female rather than male. This is because the Hebrew noun for Pestilence ('Magefah') is gendered as female, and all the other Horsemen [[LuckyTranslation already have their gender correspond to the grammatical gender]] of the [[AnthropomorphicPersonification concept they embody]].

* In the Japanese dub of ''WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants'', the Radio DJ in the episode "Krab Borg" is given a woman's voice and speech mannerisms, probably due to his pink shirt and long hair.

** BMO is an ambiguous-looking robot, has a small child's voice, takes on different gendered roles while playing pretend without any obvious preference, refers to themself using varying gendered terms depending on the episode (though masculine terms are more common), and has a counterpart in a genderflipped world who is completely identical. However, in the Mexican dub he is given a distinctive male voice and refers to himself exclusively using masculine terms, but any other show of gender ambiguity is kept, making BMO a borderline CampGay rather than a genderless machine. Something similar happened in the European and Brazilian Portuguese dubs, with him having a [[CrossDressingVoices female voice actress]]--[[TalkingToHimself the same one for Princess Bubblegum]]--in the European one, and a male, childish, and slightly gender-neutral one in the Brazilian one.

** The Italian dub initially solves the issue with Nightshade's gender identity by just claiming that they "don't identify in any gender", and they're referred to with no pronouns whatsoever for the remainder of the episode since there's no equivalent to "they/them" in Italian.

* Frenzy, a traditionally male character who was [[GenderFlip made into a girl]] for the show ''WesternAnimation/TransformersEarthSpark'', is a boy in the Hungarian dub. Also, Nightshade has dissociative disorder rather than being non-binary, as the "they/them" pronouns would make no sense in this language otherwise.

* For ''WesternAnimation/BobTheBuilder'', Muck is male in the UK, female in the American dub. Also, Scoop is female in the Swedish and Polish dub, Roley is female in the Swedish dub, and Dizzy is male in the Romanian and Slovenian dubs. Lofty is the only machine to always be male in all countries.

* For ''WesternAnimation/BobTheBuilder'', Muck is male in the UK, female in the American dub. Also, Scoop is female in the Swedish and Polish dub.

** Tigrerra was clearly designed as a male character, with the evolved form Blade Tigrerra having a clearly masculine body, but is referred to as a female in any dub. The Japanese version actually renamded her "Tigress".

** Zoisite was a flamboyant male in love with Kunzite (Malachite) in the original anime, but was changed into the female Zoycite in the Creator/DiC dub (and most others), though this was rectified in the 2014 [[Creator/VIZMedia VIZ]] dub, making him male again. At least the voice actress was competent and gave "her" serious schadenfreude. In the Italian dub, they removed the GenderBender element of the Sailor Starlights by having the Three Lights "replaced by their [[HalfIdenticalTwins twin sisters]]" instead of transform. Presumably, they hung out in {{Hammerspace}} until they were called on [[FridgeLogic or something]]. Cloverway worked around it by... never getting the license. In France, Zoisite and Malachite were brothers, (Mexico went the [=DiC=] route and made "Ziocyte" female, but did keep Haruka and Michiru's relationship) in the original [[Manga/SailorMoon manga]] the two were portrayed to have brotherly affection (if even that, given they barely interacted at all) so this change is probably the least of an alteration. The Swedish dub turned Zoicite into a woman due to the translator thinking he was a woman due to his feminine behaviour and looks and penchant for crossdressing.

* In the anime adaptation of ''LightNovel/KinosJourney'', the Japanese dub depicts Kino rejecting all gendering and being explicitly nonbinary/genderqueer, saying that they are neither a boy nor a girl but are simply Kino. In the English dub, Kino is changed to a tomboy, who simply dislikes people patronizingly calling her "little girl" or "little boy".

* In the first ''LightNovel/DotHackAIBuster'' novel, Watarai's assistant is made male by {{Creator/Tokyopop}}. No big deal, just a passing character, right? Ooooooor maybe it's the very ''female'' [[spoiler:Kamui, the KnightTemplar bad guy of ''Legend Of The Twilight'']]. {{Handwaved}}, since the series has documented players ''playing'' [[CrossPlayer the opposite gender]] on a few occasions.

* In recent works taking inspiration from ''Literature/TheBible'', especially ones from Japan, ArchangelGabriel is sometimes depicted as a woman. Examples include ''VideoGame/ElShaddaiAscensionOfTheMetatron'', ''LightNovel/HighSchoolDXD'', and ''Franchise/ShinMegamiTensei'' among others.

* When SEGA first released ''VideoGame/NinjaPrincess'', it featured a female heroine (a kunoichi) fighting to reclaim her castle from evil tyrants. However, when translating the game for the American market, the game was rebranded as ''The Ninja'' or ''SEGA Ninja'', the PlayerCharacter was changed to a generic male ninja, and the princess became a DistressedDamsel.

** The only occasions where the Smurfette Principle is in effect are ''[[Series/PowerRangersNinjaStorm Ninja Storm]]'', ''[[Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder Dino Thunder]]'' and ''[[Series/PowerRangersJungleFury Jungle Fury]]'', all featuring ThreePlusTwo (plus [[SixthRanger one more]] in ''Ninja Storm''[='s=] case) configurations where the main team was two guys and a girl, with more males joining later on. ''[[Series/PowerRangersRPM RPM]]'' was also a ThreePlusTwo (plus two more) setup, but one of the later additions was also female.
** Averted with ''Series/PowerRangersDinoCharge'', which is the first case where ''Power Rangers'' ''keeps'' a four-male, one-female setup (not counting the temporary Alien Rangers team from the end of ''Mighty [=Morphin'=]''). Though similar to ''RPM'', the ''Sentai'' had multiple additions including a second girl (and, as an EleventhHourRanger, a third); ''Dino Charge'' ended up making that second girl's counterpart the team's mentor, so she was there from the start.

* In the Finnish language ''ComicStrip/{{Mutts}}'', Mooch is named Kati, which is a female name. It was propably the translator's decision to have a girl cat paired with a boy dog in the comic. It becomes interesting when later in the comic strip's run Mooch is shown to be romantically interested in female cats. Mooch was never renamed in the translation, so to the readers the character appeared as lesbian.

* To [[AffirmativeActionGirl make the show more marketable to girls]] (especially to tomboys if they aren't likely to want to identify with TheChick) when the original show had TheSmurfettePrinciple in play;

** In the Hindi dub, Brock's Happiny was referred to as a male. Happiny ''[[SingleGenderRace cannot ever be]]'' [[SingleGenderRace male]] [[CriticalResearchFailure in the games]].

* Cera from ''WesternAnimation/TheLandBeforeTime'' is a boy in the Hungarian version... but only in movies ''II'' and ''III''. Confusing matters, she's technically seen as a girl in the latter, despite having a male voice.

* In the Latin Spanish dub of ''Anime/DiGiCharatNyo!'', Gema is dubbed as female, despite being male in the original version.

* In the Latin Spanish dub of ''[[Anime/DiGiCharat Di Gi Charat Nyo!]]'', Gema is dubbed as female, despite being male in the original version.

* The MoralGuardians [[GetBackInTheCloset don't want]] a crossdresser or gay character in the cast (this is the most popular reason behind this trope, particularly in the case of ''Anime/SailorMoon'').

** Providing the current page image, when Creator/SabanEntertainment adapted ''Series/KyoryuSentaiZyuranger'' into the original ''Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers'', they took advantage of their flexible adaptation method to avert the SmurfettePrinciple by casting a woman as the Yellow Ranger. They'd repeat this trick in future seasons when necessary: ''[[Series/PowerRangersLostGalaxy Lost Galaxy]]'', ''[[Series/PowerRangersLightspeedRescue Lightspeed Rescue]]'', ''[[Series/PowerRangersTimeForce Time Force]]'', and ''[[Series/PowerRangersWildForce Wild Force]]'', were adapted from "Pink (White with Pink accents for ''Wild Force'') is the only female Ranger" ''Sentai''s, giving the male Yellow Rangers female counterparts. This is also why those rangers don't have a skirt like their fellow female teammates, though many of these costumes were given skirts when worn by [[Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger Luka Millify/GokaiYellow]]/[[Series/PowerRangersSuperMegaforce Gia Moran/Super Megaforce Yellow]].

* The manga adaptation of ''LightNovel/SorcererStabberOrphen'' features a flashback chapter at the end of the last volume, revolving around Orphen and Hartia on a mission for the Tower of Fangs. In the German version, Hartia is inexplicably referred to with female pronouns... even though when he showed up earlier in the series, he was correctly identified as male.

* The work is being translated into a language that uses a strict masculine/feminine grammatical gender, and the character is nonbinary. However, it should be said that nonbinary speakers of the destination languages still exist, and the fact they have to use either the masculine or the feminine grammatical gender to refer to themselves doesn't make them any less nonbinary.
