When this trope is applied specifically to a hostage situation, it's YouCanKeepHer. May lead to MurderByInaction if the hero ''does'' decide to leave them to their fate. If they refuse to save someone because it's not their problem, it's BystanderSyndrome. If they react to the disliked's predicament with glee, especially if the disliked is beyond rescuing, that's AndThereWasMuchRejoicing. Contrast SaveTheJerk (a hero saves a jerkass), SaveTheVillain (a hero saves a villain), VillainousRescue (a villain saves a hero), ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike and UnwantedRescue. Compare MistreatmentInducedBetrayal, and CallousnessTowardsEmergency (where a Jerkass refuse to save someone from danger). Also see DelayingTheRescue.

In some cases, this doesn't last long. The hero will eventually end up saving the villain, jerk, or annoyance, albeit with some reluctance. Sometimes, it could be their [[ConscienceMakesYouGoBack conscience that causes them to return to help the unlikable person.]] Sometimes, they'll get [[WhatTheHellHero called out by their friends]], either being told that [[NotSoDifferentRemark they're no better than the enemy]], that [[RousseauWasRight the villain/jerk isn't such a bad guy]], or that they're {{no|True Scotsman}} [[ATrueHero real hero]]. * You can pull this on the Citadel Council in ''VideoGame/MassEffect1''; because they questioned you, mocked you, and even screwed you over by colluding with Udina to ground your ship down because it's considered politically inconvenient - when the geth arrive and the ''Destiny Ascension'' calls for help, you can have the opportunity to simply stand back and watch, as the fleet obliterates the ''Destiny Ascension'' (one of the dialogue options even says "[[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Let the Council die!]]") so that the Alliance can swoop in and destroy the remaining geth and focus on Sovereign later. This, however, comes with the caveat that will worsen relations between humans and the Council-aligned alien species, not to mention the 10,000 casualties from the ''Destiny Ascension'''s destruction.

** In ''VideoGame/MassEffect3'', [[spoiler:the Renegade method of achieving peace between the Geth and the Quarian is to remind the latter that they are sick and tired of saving them everytime they are in trouble due to various blunders (Han'Gerrel attempting to blow up a Geth dreadnought, with Shepard with co ''still'' inside it, doesn't help) and, if they attack a soon-to-be-upgraded Geth instead of standing down and listen to them, Shepard will be glad to stand back and watch as the Geth destroys the entirety of the Quarian fleet. This, however, require a fair bit of preparatory choices going back as far as ''Mass Effect 2'' to be available (as is the more Paragon alternative to reconciling the two sides).
