SubTrope of ArtisticLicenseBiology. Contrast with WhaleEgg, in which a mammal reproduces the non-mammal way. Can go hand-in-hand with NonMammalMammaries. InterspeciesRomance examples count too if the character giving birth to the non-mammal is oviviviparous, but the partner not giving birth is viviparous (never vice-versa though). See also MrSeahorse for another trope about characters getting pregnant/giving birth when they shouldn't be able to.

In their case, this was justified due to their lifestyle restricting them to the ocean, making it impossible for them to go onto dry land to lay their eggs.

* Though not truly live birth, there are some snake, lizard, and shark species which lay and incubate their eggs inside their bodies, in which then their young hatch and come out, giving the appearance of live birth. These animals are known as ''ovoviviparous'': while the eggs develop inside the mother's body, they are not connected to or nourished by the mother's body as in a ''viviparous'' (true live-birthing animal) species, and instead is nourished by a supply of yolk.

Each egg ovulated immediately begins development into an aphid embryo as it travels down the oviduct, and once said embryo's oviducts are developed enough it starts ovulating itself: even ''before'' it's been born! Naturally, this coupled with the fact that all aphids are asexual females makes them one of nature's most prolific [[ExplosiveBreeder Explosive Breeders.]]

Not really an example. While vampires usually make more vampires by biting humans, that doesn't mean that they're incapable of reproducing. Also, this trope refers to animals becoming pregnant and giving birth when they lay eggs in real life, and I'm certain that an undead mammal would still be a mammal.

MostWritersAreHuman, and humans are mammals. Despite less than 1% of animal species being mammal (thus able to birth live), some writers, especially when writing an anthropomorphic animal work, may find a non-mammal laying and rearing eggs odd and have them reproduce the mammal way.

This trope applies to monotremes, that special order of mammals which lay eggs, living creatures that reproduce by splitting up, mythological creatures that are not usually depicted as giving live birth, and even an AnimateInanimateObject can qualify if they are shown getting pregnant or giving birth.

In spite of the title, the non-mammal does not have to be shown pregnant, just birthing live young, and vice-versa.

** The tribbets are another example, being land-dwelling fish that give birth to live young, having descended from livebearer fish like guppies and swordtails.
