* ''Literature/GoblinsInTheCastle'': ''Goblins on the Prowl'' reveals that Granny Pinchbottom has come up with one for some of her creations -- "specipe", a combination of "spell" and "recipe", which is used when she's creating a new goo-like substance with a specific magical purpose. The word's use initially confuses Fauna the first time Granny uses it in her presence; thankfully, Granny explains when Fauna expresses this confusion.

examples are not general

* Real life has an equivalent called "compound words". However, letters are not taken out of the words themselves, they are just slammed together. Some examples are "lifetime" (life time), "pickpocket" (pick pocket), and "windmill" (wind mill). Many given names also are or originally were compound words.
* Oxymorons are compound words where the combined words are the ''exact opposite'' of each other. However, the words have nothing to do with the context of the word itself. Some examples are "ballpoint" (ball point), "begone" (be gone), and even the word "oxymoron" (oxy moron, from the Greek words for "sharp" and "dull").
* Some hybrids created from two species or established breeds can get a portmanteau name such as "liger" (offspring of a male lion and a female tiger[[note]] The offspring of a female lion and a male tiger is a "tigon" or "tiglon".[[/note]] or "labradoodle" (a labrador and a poodle). A newer example that scientists accidently created, to their own surprise, is the "sturddlefish" (sturgeon+paddlefish).
** Poodles, in particular, seem to inspire a lot of these, with crosses like 'cockapoo' (cocker spaniel + poodle), 'schnoodle' (miniature schnauzer + poodle) and 'doodleman pinscher' (doberman pinscher + poodle).
* {{Portmanteau Couple Name}}s are common for shipping names such as "Brangelina." Don't try this with '''Pee'''ta and Kat'''niss''' (or alternatively '''Kat'''niss and '''Pee'''ta) from ''The Hunger Games'' though.
* In German the portmanteau using first syllables only is sometimes also used when a person has two given names of equal importance, as in the case of television journalist Hanns Joachim Friedrichs, known as Hajo to his friends.

* Brazilian association football\soccer has many such names for their derbies, such as Grenal (Grêmio\Internacional), Atletiba (Atlético-PR\Coritiba) Fla-Flu (Flamengo\Fluminense) and San-São (Santos\São Paulo, also the Portuguese name of Samson). There was also player Vampeta, "Vampire + Capeta" (the latter one of the many names of {{Satan}} in Portuguese), a childhood nickname inspired by his teeth that had fallen.

** When the City & South London Railway was merged with the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway, the resulting tube line became known as the Morden–Edgware line, but a number of portmanteau names were considered for the route, such as "Edgmor", "Mordenware", "Medgeway" and "Edgmorden". Ultimately, none were chosen, and the route became known as the Northern line.
* Conrail was short for ''Con''solidated ''Rail'', a name befitting its role as the consolidation of several struggling freight railroads in the Northeastern United States to operate as one entity.
* The Burlington Northern Railroad took its name by borrowing words from the railroads that were merged to create it: the Chicago, ''Burlington'' & Quincy Railroad, as well as the ''Northern'' Pacific and Great ''Northern''.
* Norfolk Southern Railway was created through the merger of two East Coast railroads, the ''Norfolk'' & Western, and the ''Southern'' Railway. Incidentally, the Norfolk Southern name had originally been used by a regional railroad that operated in northern North Carolina until 1974 when it was bought out by the Southern.
* The merger of the Burlington Northern with the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe in 1995 led to the combined railroad being named the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
* There's a variant of this where two companies merge, and one company name survives while taking on the other's logo.
** An example of this happened in 1988 when the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad bought the Southern Pacific Railroad. The combined railroad took on the Southern Pacific name, since Southern Pacific had more track mileage. The one noticeable change was to Southern Pacific's "Bloody Nose" paint scheme, as the serif font used for the railroad name on the sides of new locomotives was replaced by the Rio Grande's "speed lettering", which was utilized on all SP locomotives built until the railroad was folded into Union Pacific.
*** Before this, there was the Southern Pacific's attempt to merge with the Santa Fe. The resulting railroad would've been named the SPSF, and the paint scheme it had would've combined the yellow of the Santa Fe's "Yellowbonnet" paint scheme with the "Bloody Nose" red of Southern Pacific. This paint scheme was commonly referred to by railfans as the "Kodachrome" paint scheme because these were the colorings on packaging for Kodak film.
** In the airline mergers of the 2010s, United and Continental Airlines merged. The combined airline used the United Airlines name, but the Continental globe logo in lieu of United's old Tulip logo.

Ultimately, none were chosen, and the route became known as the Northern line.
