* ''VideoGame/{{Iji}}'': This is a common first attack manuver called the Alpha Strike. It basically just involves having every ship in the alien fleet firing lasers on the planet from orbit. The Tasen strike Earth with one before they're even spotted and the climax of the game is defeating the commander before a second one is called in to finish the job.

Firing toed meteors rather than regular projectiles, to even more devastating effect. The largest meteor launched Noted to have resulted in Miami being turned into a seawater-filled crater.

** In the films themselves, the original plan to deal with the Rebels in ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' was to bombard the base with Star Destroyers. When Ozzel screwed up and the Rebels got a bombardment-proof shield up, they resorted to going under the barrier with a ground side assault.
** In ''Film/TheLastJedi'', the Resistance base on D'Qar is promptly evacuated at the beginning, right before being obliterated by an orbital strike from the First Order's ''Mandator IV''-class Siege Dreadnought, which specializes in that kind of things.

A term frequently used in relation to this trope is "glassing," which originally referred to the bombardment being intense enough to cause the soil to vitrify, or melt into volcanic glass. Such as what happened at the Trinity nuclear test site.

* While this has obviously never happened, it should be noted that the history of aerial bombardment shows that strategic bombardment of this type [[https://acoup.blog/2022/10/21/collections-strategic-airpower-101/ almost never works]]. It is far more effective to focus on attacking actual military targets that help one win the war directly, what is known as air interdiction or close air support, depending on how close friendly forces are.
** Sadly, that blog post is wrong from beginning to end, and even makes concessions enough to neuter itself. It's not true that the bomber must always get through in order to have strategic impact. It's not true that bombing failed to have strategic impacts in the conflicts where the author makes that claim, it's not true that ground action would have been a more efficient means of accomplishing strategic effect. Look, for example, at the casualties taken in suppressing nazi germany via ground action and at the projected casualties for the invasion of japan. Think of the strategic costs that would have been involved in ground action in north vietnam or yugoslavia. And, for our purposes, the author's concerns about air defenses, imprecision and insufficient destructive impact of munitions, and even skepticism about effects on morale are irrelevant (since if you kill everyone you want to kill with orbital bombardment morale is a moot question).

Even worse, it was entirely possible to build it by the end of the decade. Even at the peak of the nuclear arms race, President Kennedy was so terrified by the blueprints' theoretical destructive powers, he orded the end of any further research in Orion propulsion, and the destruction of all blueprints and scale models.
