Every game in the genre has its own permutations, but the classic formula found in ''DotA'' goes like this: there are two teams. Each one has a base. The point of the game is to destroy the enemy's base before he does the same to yours. Each base has static defenses, and helps players attack by sending squads of mooks. PlayerCharacters, called "Heroes", are far more powerful than any mook squad and gain {{Character Level}}s. Heroes kill the mooks (and each other) for ExperiencePoints and gold, the former to learn new abilities and the latter to buy items. Apart from this tug-o-war, there may or may not be any other activities to participate in, such as killing off neutral creeps. In this sort of environment, teamwork is ''essential'', and to add to the chaos MOBA games generally feature LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters, each with a unique set of skills, abilities and statistics. Finding a Hero you're good at is a key step in gameplay, and learning how to combat or assist the other Heroes currently in play is another.
